3 1. Photosynthesis Basics
Define: A process by which an autotroph (ex. plant) uses the sun’s energy to make food (simple sugar= glucose) Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight  C6H12O6 + 6O2 PHOTOSYNTHESIS Phases: Light Reaction Dark Reaction Simplified: Production of simple sugar (glucose = C6H12O6)

4 2. Importance of Pigments
Chloroplasts  contain pigments Pigments – absorb and reflect light Chlorophyll, most common pigment, absorbs all color of light except GREEN, it reflects it! Fall leaves  no chlorophyll Stacks contain pigment that absorb light

End Product = ATP used in dark reaction

7 4. Dark Reaction AKA the “Calvin Cycle” Does not depend on light
End Result = GLUCOSE

9 1.Cellular Respiration Basics
Equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Define: A process by which mitochondria breaks down food to produce energy Cellular Respiration Stages: Glycolysis Citric Acid/Krebs Cycle Electron Transport Chain * All living things undergo cell respiration, even plants!

10 2. Glycolysis Does not require oxygen (anaerobic)
Series of chemical reactions that break down glucose into 2 pyruvic acid molecules Starts with 2 ATP Produces 4 ATP Net ATP = 2ATP * Not most effective way to produce energy

11 3. Citric Acid or Krebs Cylce
2nd step of respiration only if oxygen is present Every turn produces 1 ATP, 2 CO2

12 4. Electron Transport Chain
Step #3 of Cell Respiration only if oxygen is present MOST EFFECTIVE way to produce ATP End result = 32 ATP
