Environmental certification VHC All of SLU certified by 2016

Everyone must take responsibility!  SLU as a whole  You as an employee  You as an individual The year 2060 Boy: Grandad, why didn’t you do something? Grandad: We were busy watching ’Idol’.

The environmental management system is a continual process It will lead to:  environmental improvements  increased knowledge  environmental commitment  procedures  management taking increased responsibility  reduced costs  increased goodwill

Environmental certification under ISO An environmental management system shows how we can reduce our environmental impact. The VHC environment group working with the certificate is looking at our impact when it comes to air, water, soil and resource use. The group has one representative - an environmental officer - from each department. Theresia Larsson is the environmental coordinator for VHC and project manager.

Significant environmental aspects/environmental impact Significant negative aspect/impact: Isoflurane gas Domestic air travel Business trips by car Water consumption Paper consumption Use of chemicals Use of pharmaceuticals Use of medical-technical supplies Targets defined for the significant aspects Significant positive aspects/impact: Training Video meetings

What all staff must know about waste management:  You must be familiar with the procedures for recycling - separating paper, plastic, glass, compostable waste, combustible waste, batteries etc. This is done in the kitchens/lunch rooms, in your office and in the recycling rooms.  To avoid environmental accidents and contamination, you must also be familiar with the procedures that apply to your daily work.  If you handle chemicals or pharmaceuticals, you must be be aware of the rules and procedures that apply. There should be procedures in place in all units concerned.  If you handle hazardous waste, you must be familiar with the procedures that apply to that kind of waste.

Emergencies – what everyone must know In case of a major accident, call 112. Escape routes – where is your nearest one? Which assembly centre should you head for if there is a fire? What is a fire compartment? Where are the defibrillators located? Where are the eyewash stations/emergency showers in your department? What to do in case of chemical/pharmaceutical spill? If you handle hazardous substances, you must be familiar with the procedures in place to avoid accidents or fire. All staff must undergo fire safety training.

Environmental guide The environmental guide contains objectives, action plans, procedures and rules for the environmental work at SLU and VHC. In the guide, we present the procedures we need to follow to reach the environmental objectives. All staff must know where to find the guide – this is something that will be checked during an audit. You will find the guide on the website - For staff - Environment.

Heads of division/department Have a special responsibility for:  making sure the environmental management system works;  objectives being set;  ensuring that procedures, laws and other regulations are respected;  communicating the results of the environmental work;  assigning sufficient resources.
