Dependent or Subordinate Clauses and Independent Clauses What are they? How do you I know which is which? What do they look like in sentences?

What is a clause  A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. It can be either independent or dependent (subordinate).  The dog is in the room.  This is an independent clause because it has a subject and a verb and it a complete thought.  Because I was late.  This is a dependent clause because it has a subject and a verb but is NOT a complete thought which causes it to be a fragment of a sentence. Correct the sentence to make it a complete sentence.

How do you define an independent clause?  An independent clause can stand alone as a complete grammatical sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of the sentence. It may or may not have an object. Also remember, in English, the sentence order is Subject, Verb, (Object).  The dog is in the room.  The dog = subject  Is = verb  the room = object

Identify the subject, verb, and object (if the object is included) in the following sentences.  John hit his sister.  I love school.  She was with my brother.  I am going.

How do you define a dependent or subordinate clause?  A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a grammatical sentence because of an extra element that changes an independent clause into a dependent clause. It must always be connected to an independent clause.  Because I woke up late, I missed the bus.  Because I woke up late = dependent clause  I missed the bus = independent clause

Turn the following subordinate clauses (or dependent clauses) into complete sentences.  Because I was late  After the bell rang  When my alarm went off  Although I trust you  Whenever I go to the mall

Changing the order in which a subordinate clause can present itself in a sentence.  Because I was late, I was speeding and got a ticket.  I was speeding and got a ticket, because I was late.  I was speeding, because I was late, and got a ticket.

Now you try it for the sentences that you completed for the following subordinate clauses.  Because I was late  After the bell rang  When my alarm went off  Although I trust you  Whenever I go to the mall

Sentence Patterns: Copy the sentence onto your sentence pattern handout. Underline the independent clause/s once and the dependent clause/s twice. 1.She woke up late, yet she made it to school on time. 2.I love cupcakes; I cannot walk into a bakery without buying one. 3.Because I have such a sweet tooth for cupcakes, I love to bake. 4.I love to bake, because I have such a sweet tooth.

Sentence Patterns: Copy the sentence onto your sentence pattern handout. Underline the independent clause/s once and the dependent clause/s twice. 5. I went to Crave Cupcake, because I love cupcakes, and bought three different cupcakes. 6. I bought a chocolate cupcake, red velvet cupcake, and a German chocolate cupcake. 7. After I went to Crave Cupcake, I ate all of my cupcakes.

 Now you come up with a sentence for each sentence pattern. Underline the independent clause/s once and the dependent clause/s twice.

Warm-Up (2-7) 11/04/2013  Copy the following sentences. Underline the independent clause ONCE and the dependent clause TWICE.  Because I left the house late, I missed my appointment.  I love to swim; that’s why I swim everyday.  My goal is to be a pilot, so I can travel all the time.
