Sentence structure: what are different ways to create good sentences? Let’s start at the beginning:
clause a group of words that contains a verb and its subject and that is used as part of a sentence.

2. Review What does every simple sentence contain?
A subject and predicate
The who or what of the sentence is called what?
Subject
What does the predicate contain?
Verb

3. Quick practice: identify the subject and verb of each:
The dog bit its tail.
Green eggs and ham are gross.
Mary used a light pink pen.
Cats don’t really care about you.
Vanilla and chocolate are the most popular flavors.

4. The 2 types of clauses
independent clause (aka complete sentence) has sub/verb AND expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence. 
A dependent clause (aka subordinate clause) has sub/verb BUT does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence. 
***a FRAGMENT is a group of words that is missing a sub or verb

8. Example:
I have a dog named Hope. She likes to run. She likes swimming better. She always has fun. Hope is brown and white. She likes to play. I take her to the park every Saturday.

9. COMPOUND SENTENCES
Compound sentences are made up of two independent sentences.
Each part of the sentence can stand alone as a complete sentence.
A complete sentence is also known as an independent clause.

10. There are two ways to write compound sentences:
I, cc I
independent clause , CC independent clause
Coordinating Conjunctions: (FANBOYS)
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
I went to the store, and I bought milk and bread.

11. Practice The students finished class. They went to lunch.
Kevin did not want to hurt Kathy’s feelings. He said nothing about her mistake.
I want to see my sister soon. She has been in Switzerland for two years.

12. There are two ways to write compound sentences:
I ; I
independent clause ; independent clause
I went to the store ; I bought milk and bread.

13. Practice Susan loves to swim. Samuel likes to dive.
Joe was highly respected. He was always such a nice person.
The game was over quickly. It started storming during the last quarter.

14. Examples
Football is my favorite sport to watch, but TENNIS is my favorite sport to play.
The meeting was over; it was already midnight.
The children ran all the way to school, yet they were late anyway.
Sue loves to swim; her brother likes to run track.

16. COMMA SPLICE: A comma shoved between two independent clauses
COMMA SPLICE: A comma shoved between two independent clauses. I am going to the mall, I need some new shoes. FIX IT: I am going to the mall; I need new shoes.
