racism  Prejudice and discrimination because of someone’s race/ethnicity  1960s saw as real issue/problem in America

Watts Riots  1960s in Los Angeles  Distrust of police erupts in massive riot by minorities  Buildings burned, looted  Violent example of racial tension  34 killed, 900 injured

Kerner commission  Figure out why urban riots happen and how to prevent them  Caused by racism and dominant white society  Recommended more jobs in inner cities and better housing

Chicago  MLK movement moves to Chicago to highlight housing problem  Showed racism and discrimination in north  Met with protest, very little changed
