2 March on Washington 1963 – King and SCLC organize march
200,000 people attend King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech

3 Freedom Summer Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination in hiring, and segregation in stores, restaurants, theaters, and hotels African Americans still could not vote in South, so thousands of civil rights workers go there to help

4 The Right to Vote SNCC organizes march in Selma and police beat the marchers Voting Rights Act of 1965 forces the South to let African Americans vote 1966 – 100 African Americans hold office in South 1972 – over 1000 African Americans hold office in South

5 Other Voices Some African Americans wanted reform to move more quickly
Malcolm X criticized integration and said separation was better Later, he calls for a “white-black brotherhood” He is assassinated by rival Black Muslims Malcolm Little, aka Malcolm X

6 Black Power Stokley Carmichael (leader of the SNCC) and other said African Americans should be proud of themselves and create their own culture and political institutions NAACP rejected this idea Tommie Smith and John Carlos

7 Violence Erupts Black Panthers demanded reform and armed themselves in opposition to the police 1965 Watts Riots – 1 week of rioting, 34 people died – Rioting in more than 40 Northern cities President Johnson appoints the Kerner Commission and they said U.S. was moving towards two separate and unequal societies Bobby Seale and Huey Newton

8 King is Assassinated April 4, 1968 – MLK assassinated in Memphis, TN
Rioting in over 100 cities Thousands attend Atlanta funeral, millions watch on tv
