2 In the mid to late 1960’s, the struggle for Civil Rights shifted to the North
Northern cities had de facto segregation, unlike the de jure segregation of the South De facto = in fact, in practice De jure = in law The struggle in the North focused on equality in housing, healthcare, education, and job opportunities Violence erupted in Northern cities African Americans protesting, especially for economic equality, clashed violently with predominantly white police forces

The Nation of Islam, a group of African American Muslims, was founded by the preacher Elijah Muhammad Malcolm X was one of the most prominent members of the Nation of Islam publically called for African Americans to separate from the rest of America and for the use of force in defending their rights and persons The Black Power movement was a general trend among many to move away from the policies of nonviolence and cooperation with whites The Black Panthers focused on fighting police brutality in the ghettoes of American cities
