Axum/Aksum (~100AD-~900) Major trading empire in Ethiopian Highlands, touches Nile River King Ezana converted empire to Christianity (Lost control of trade to Muslim kingdoms)

Zimbabwe (~1300-~1400) Located on East coast of Africa near Zambezi and Limpopo rivers Shona people established capitol of Great Zimbabwe to take control of (monopolize) gold industry (Possibly declined because of food/water shortages)

West African Kingdoms ( ) Successive (one after the other) empires, starting with Ghana, then Mali, finally Songhai Kingdoms built on trading gold for salt (location below Sahara Desert, next to Niger River)

Mali’s Mansa Musa supported education and arts, ruled empire with strict code Timbuktu and Gao were two famous trading cities during this time West Africa (continued)
