What is Health?

According to Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary…  Health is... ‐ The condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit.  All of these aspects are very important when considering complete health for a particular individual.  Which aspect is the most important?

Why is it important to be Healthy?  1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “ 19 Do you know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? 20 You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Although there are many answers… Here are a few…  Longer lives  Reduce risk of harmful diseases  Increases ability and opportunity to enjoy life and have fun

5 Aspects of Health  Spiritual  The development of faith (Relationship with God) in one’s religion.  Mental  A state of mind where stress, tension, worry, and/or negative thoughts are absent.  Emotional  Being able to balance different emotions to ensure a positive state of mind.  Physical  When the body is free from any physical ailment or abnormal condition.  Social  The ability to create, and maintain positive relationships with a variety of individuals.

Why are fruits a part of OUR plate? Well… Fruits…  are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories  they provide many important nutrients that our body needs to function properly  are rich in potassium, to maintain healthy blood pressure (Heart Health)  are a good source of dietary fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol and decreases risk of heart disease (Heart Health)  are important for keeping teeth and gums healthy (Vitamin C)

Fruit Example of Fruits  Apple  Apple Sauce  Banana  Grapes  Oranges  Strawberry  Watermelon  Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the fruit group.  The amount of fruit you need to eat depends on age, gender, and level of physical activity.

Well… Vegetables…  are typically, naturally low in fat and calories  like fruits, are important sources of many nutrients  are rich in potassium, to maintain a healthy blood pressure (Heart Health)  are a good source of dietary fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease (Heart Health)  are important for keeping eyes and skin healthy (Vitamin A)  are important for keeping teeth and gums healthy (Vitamin C)

Vegetable Examples of Vegetables  Dark Green Vegetables  Broccoli, Greens, Spinach, Dark Green Leafy Lettuce  Red and Orange Vegetables  Carrots, Pumpkin, Tomatoes, Tomato Juice  Beans and Peas  Dry beans and peas (such as black, garbanzo, kidney, pinto, or soy beans, or black-eyes peas, or split peas  Starchy Vegetables  Corn (White or Yellow), Green Peas, White Potatoes  Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the vegetable group.  Other Vegetables  Celery, Cucumber, Lettuce (Iceberg or Head), Mushrooms, and Onions

Well… Grains…  are an important source of many nutrients  are a good source of dietary fiber, which may help reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes  provide nutrients to assist the body in metabolism (energy) (B Vitamins)  help the body form red blood cells (Vitamin B)  are a good source of Iron, which is used to carry oxygen in the blood  also help the body build bones, release energy from our muscles (Magnesium)  and are important for a healthy immune system (Selenium)

Well… Proteins…  provide many nutrients that are vital for health and maintenance of the body  are the building blocks for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood  are also building blocks for (enzymes) hormones, and vitamins  help the body release energy, play a vital role in the function of the nervous system, aid in the formation of red blood cells, and help build tissues (B Vitamins)  are a good source of Iron, which is used to carry oxygen in the blood  are used to build bones, and release energy from the muscles (Magnesium)  helps the Immune System function properly (Zinc)  reduce the risk of disease (Heart Health)

Well… Dairies…  provide the body with some very important nutrients  are a good source of Calcium, which help the body build healthy bones and teeth  are a good source of Potassium, which may help to maintain healthy blood pressure (Heart Health)  help maintain proper levels of Calcium and Phosphorus, which help the body build and maintain bones
