Vitamins “Any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be synthesized by the body.” ~ Oxford American English Dictionary Vitamins are an essential part of what we eat in order to help us grow and stay healthy.

9 9 Why vitamins are essential to our body Why are Vitamins Essential Growth & Development Vitamins provide our body with the key nutrients it needs to continue growth and development. Vitamin Deficiencies Inadequate vitamin intake risks your health, as you'll be more vulnerable to heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. Basic Functions Each vitamin has a specific function, but each vitamin also works together to facilitate optimal health. Vitamin deficiencies be a contributing cause of mental problems such as ADHD, and also physical problems such as Rheumatoid arthritis.

10 10 Minerals The body uses minerals to perform many different functions.

Minerals “An inorganic substance needed by the human body for good health.” ~ Oxford American English Dictionary Minerals are substances found in food that the body needs for growth and health. There are two kinds of minerals, macro minerals and trace minerals. Macro minerals are needed in larger amounts while trace minerals are needed in small amounts

12 12 Types of Minerals Types of minerals and their benefits Calcium Ca Iron Fe Magnesium Mg Phosphorus P Potassium K Zinc Zn Macromineral Calcium can be found in dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese, you can also find it in broccoli, and dark leafy vegetables. Trace Mineral Iron can be found in read meats, pork, fish and shellfish, poultry, beans, soy foods, and green leafy vegetables. Macromineral Magnesium can be found in whole grains, whole-grain breads, nuts, seeds, potatoes, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, and chocolate. Macromineral Phosphorus can be found in most foods, but the best sources are dairy foods, meat, and fish. Macromineral Potassium can be found in broccoli, potatoes (with skins), green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, bananas, and dried fruits. Trace Mineral Zinc can be found in red meat, poultry, oysters and other seafood, nuts, dried beans, milk, other dairy products, and whole grains.

It also helps the body create energy and make proteins. P Phosphorus Phosphorus helps the body make energy. It is part of every cell membrane, and every cell in the body needs phosphorus to function normally. K Potassium Potassium helps with heart, muscle, and nervous system functions. It also helps the body maintain the balance of water in the blood and body tissues. Zn Zinc Zinc is important for normal everyday growth, maintaining a strong immune system and healing wounds.

Teens need 15 micrograms of vitamin D from food or supplements every day, need 15 mg of vitamin E every day, and at least 1,600 milligrams of omega-3s every day.
