Choosing to Live Healthfully Lifestyle factors Behaviors and habits that help determine a person’s level of health and wellness. Relate to the cause or prevention of health problems Positive factors=Good Health Negative Factors=Poor Health Life style factors examples? For Example: Not wearing sunscreen when going to the beach.

Positive Lifestyle Factors Eating Well-balanced meals; starting with a good breakfast Getting 60 minutes of physical activity daily Sleeping at least 8 hours each night Doing your best in school and other activities Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs Following safety rules Relating well to family, friends, and classmates

Risks and your health Risk Behaviors are actions or behaviors that might cause injury or harm to yourself or others. Some are obvious at the time, while others are not. Obvious example: Crossing the street without a crosswalk Not obvious: Smoking may not have an immediate effect on your health, but causes cancer later making it a risk behavior Sedentary lifestyle is a way of life that includes little physical activity. Sitting in front of the TV or computer is a sedentary behavior.

Risk and consequences All risk behaviors have consequences Some are minor or short term consequences Others are more serious and sometimes can be life threatening. For example, drinking alcohol can lead to more serious consequences Alcohol can damage all three areas of the health triangle Can lead to addictions (physical and mental) Can lead to problems with family and friends(social) Cumulative risks are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. For example, riding a bike in bad weather, not wearing a helmet, and crossing the street without a cross walk.

Reducing Risk Precautions are planned actions taken before an event to increase the chances of a safe outcome. Use positive health behaviors to reduce some risk Example of a precaution is wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Prevention means taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. Prevention includes getting regular medical and dental checkups

Choosing Abstinence The most effective from of prevention is abstinence. Abstinence is the conscious, active choice not to participate in high-risk behaviors. Often used for to avoid sexual activity, but abstinence extend to any high risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking, or using any drugs. Abstinence benefits all sides of your health triangle. Practicing abstinence shows that you are assuming responsibility for your personal health behavior and that you respect yourself and others

Taking responsibility for your health As a teen you should start taking responsibility for your health. Staying informed is one way of taking responsibly for your health You can have greater success in taking responsibility for your health if you keep a positive attitude.

Attitude Attitude is a personal feeling or belief Teens with a positive attitude about their health are more likely to practice good health habits and take responsibility for it. Taking responsibility means more than just recognizing healthy choices, but means to also believe in that good health habit
