5 YOUR HEALTH… Being healthy is more than just not being sick. It also involves feeling good about yourself and getting along with other people. Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. SOCIAL PHYSICAL MENTAL/EMOTIONAL *The key to good health is keeping a balanced health triangle.

6 WHAT DOES EACH SIDE MEAN? o Physical health involves taking care of your body. This includes eating well-balanced meals and snacks, being physically active, avoiding disease, getting enough rest, and having regular medical and dental checkups. o Mental/emotional health involves liking and accepting yourself for who you are. This includes finding solutions to problems, expressing emotions in healthy ways, and finding positive ways to manage stress. o Social health involves getting along with other people. This includes being a caring family member, making and keeping friends, and giving support when it’s needed. Social health also involves interacting with many different types of people, including both males and females and members of different ethnic and cultural groups. o Wellness.mht Wellness.mht

8 WHAT IS WELLNESS? Wellness is more than being healthy. Every decision you make can affect your wellness. Wellness is an overall state of well- being, or total health. To achieve wellness, you need to make good health a part of your daily routine. For example, eating healthy snacks instead of empty-calorie foods will satisfy your hunger and contribute to your wellness. Think of some choices you have made in the last few days. Did these choices have positive effects on your overall wellness?

12 The teen years involve changes that affect all sides of your health triangle. Adapting to and coping with changes during the teen years can make you feel physically tired and emotionally stressed. The changes that occur during the teen years signal that you are on your way to becoming an adult. During these times, pay close attention to your health triangle: Physical: Be physically active, eat nutritious meals and snacks, and get enough sleep. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Mental/Emotional: Use critical thinking skills. Find positive ways to express your feelings and manage stress. Ask for help and advice from trusted adults. Social: Do your best to get along with others. Keep others’ needs in mind and offer your support. CHANGING TIMES

13 During adolescence, the time of life between childhood and adulthood, hormones will cause many changes in each part of your health triangle. Adolescence usually starts between the ages of 11 and 15. The physical changes that occur during adolescence are caused by the release of hormones in the body. Hormones are chemical substances, produced in glands, that help to regulate many body functions. During adolescence, growth is not just physical. Teens grow mentally, emotionally, and socially as well. ADOLESCENCE

14 Adolescence is one of the fastest periods of physical growth. o Both boys and girls experience changes during adolescence. o Keep in mind that everyone experiences these changes and that they are completely normal. During adolescence, you begin to experience changes specific to your gender. Boys’ voices get deeper, and girls may find their figures are developing. These changes begin at different ages for different people. Sometimes one feature or another will develop faster than others. This can make teens feel awkward or self- conscious. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

15 o During adolescence, you will experience changes in the way you think. Now you will be able to solve increasingly complex problems. o You will be able to reason more effectively and to think logically about problems. You will also be able to understand different points of view and see many possible solutions. MENTAL DEVELOPMENT Possible OUTCOMES: Situation: Tyler wants me to go with him to check out a construction site, even though there’s a “No Trespassing” sign. Possible CONSEQUENCES:  I could get hurt.  I could get in trouble with the law.  I could get in trouble with my parents.

16 EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Adolescence is also a time of great emotional changes, including: o Mood swings- confusing and disturbing. However, they are a common part of adolescence, related to the release of hormones. o New feelings toward others- you recognize that the people around you have needs, just as you do. You may take a more active interest in helping others meet their needs. o Increased romantic interest- Romantic interest develops at different times for different teens. Some teens find the new feelings they have confusing at times. They are a completely normal part of growing up. o Increased interest in what is important to you- You will begin to realize how important family, friends, and activities are to you.

17 SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Social growth involves relating to the people in your life in different ways: o Your family – you begin to act more independently and to make decisions for yourself. o Your friends and peers – you may prefer to share your thoughts and feelings with peers rather than family. o Your community – you will begin to recognize your role in the larger community. Developing positive relationships with family, peers, and role models and avoiding negative relationships is an important part of social growth. * Analyze the relationships in your lives to determine if they have a positive or negative influence.

20 TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR HEALTH In this lesson, you will Learn About… o How you can develop positive health habits. o Ways to recognize and avoid risk behaviors. o Why abstinence is the most responsible choice for teens.

22 LIFESTYLE FACTORS You might be surprised to learn how lifestyle factors affect your health. Lifestyle factors are behaviors and habits that help determine a person’s level of health. How well do you follow a healthy lifestyle? *Even though you may not notice any immediate effects, unhealthy lifestyle factors may have long-lasting negative effects. For example, regularly eating foods high in fat can lead to serious health problems.

23 1. Eat nutritious foods, including a healthy breakfast 2. Avoid tobacco, alcohol & other drugs 3. Get at least 8 hours of sleep 4. Get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day 5. Develop skills and talents 6. Prevent injuries 7. Spend time with friends. LIFESTYLE FACTORS How can each of these lifestyle factors affect your health now? How do you think it will affect your health in the future?

24 Risks are an unavoidable part of life. However, some actions involve a high level of unnecessary risk. A risk behavior is an action or behavior that might cause injury or harm to you or others. Certain risk behaviors are strongly associated with teens, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; an unhealthy diet; engaging in sexual activity. and a sedentary lifestyle, a way of life that involves little or no physical activity. Developing a healthy lifestyle is an effective strategy for counteracting these risk factors. RISK BEHAVIORS

25 CONSEQUENCES o All risk behaviors carry consequences – some minor and some major. o Many risk behaviors result in serious and far-reaching consequences. These types of behaviors are self-destructive – harmful to your physical, mental/emotional, and social health. o The combination of risk behaviors creates cumulative risks, which increase in effect with each added risk. With each additional risk, the chance for a serious consequence increases.

26 o There are several strategies that can help you avoid serious consequences: o Taking precautions o Practicing healthful behaviors o Practicing abstinence A precaution is a planned action taken before an event to increase the chances of a safe outcome. In addition to taking precautions, teens can avoid negative consequences by practicing healthful behaviors and abstinence. Abstinence is deliberate decision to avoid high- risk behavior. AVOIDING RISK BEHAVIORS

27 o You need to believe that making wise choices and developing good health habits can have a positive effect on your health. o Having a positive attitude and using self-control will help show that you are ready to take on greater responsibility. o Being responsible for your own health is an important step toward becoming an adult. Attitude- feelings and beliefs. To look, feel, and do their best, teens will need to make choices that protect and promote their health. Taking responsibility for health also requires self- control. Self-control is restraint from your own emotions and desires. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

28 Learning how to get and stay healthy should be an important part of your life. Health education is more than just learning health facts. It can help you gain the tools you need to maintain and improve your total health and wellness. LEARN THE FACTS

Choose one and think of ways you could develop it as a personal habit.
