1 Health Risks and Your Behavior Objectives Objective 1: Recognizing Risk Behaviors Objective 2: Describe the consequences of taking risks. Objective 3: How to avoid or reduce risks Objective 4: How to promote your health

2 Identifying Health Risks  Risk Behaviors: Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others  6 behaviors that account for most of the deaths & disabilities among young people: Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors (can result in what??) Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

3 Risks & Consequences  Cumulative Risks: Are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk, or combinations of risky behaviors. These may be repeated behaviors or combinations of poor choices. Examples: Smoking, eating a fast food meal, texting while driving………can you name any more???

4 Partner Activity  Rate the following risky behaviors 1-10 1 being low & 10 being high. Bungee Jumping Sky diving Eating fast food 3 days a week Asking someone out on a date that you don’t know very well Not wearing a seatbelt Sharing a water bottle Riding home with someone who’s been drinking

5 How to Avoid or Reduce Risks  Prevention: Taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. What are some things we do (or have already done) to prevent health problems? o Abstinence: A deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors. o What are some things we should abstain from?

6 Promoting Your Health  Understanding how your decisions impact your health will inspire you to adopt healthful behaviors.  Positive choices can promote wellness and prevent the development of disease.

7 Lifestyle Factors  Positive lifestyle factors include: Getting 8 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for 30-60 minutes most days of the week Maintaining a healthy weight Abstaining from smoking or using other tobacco products Abstaining from the use of alcohol, and other drugs
