6 So……… Being healthy does not mean that you will never be sick. Instead, it means striving to be the best you can be at any given time.

7 Promoting Your Health Lifestyle factors- Habits that affect people’s overall health, happiness, and longevity, or how long they live. Can be negative: smoking, drinking, etc. Can be positive: Getting 8-10 hrs of sleep each night Managing stress Abstinence (substances, sex)

Health Education- the providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices Health Literacy- a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his/her health and wellness

11 Healthy People 2010 A nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. 2 main goals Increase quality and years of healthy life Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location.

15 Influences on Your Health
Heredity- all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. Environment- The sum of your surroundings. Physical (where you live) Social (parents, peers-people of same age who share similar interests, etc.)

16 Other Influences Culture- The collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. Attitude- The way you view situations. Your attitude greatly affects the choices you make. Behavior- Ex: family history of heart disease doesn’t mean you have to follow in footsteps. You can make your own choices. Media- the various methods of communicating information. Technology- Medicine, TV, video games, etc.

17 Reducing Health Risks Risk Behaviors- Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Examples????

18 Cumulative Risks Cumulative Risks- related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Examples: Smoking cigarettes, driving too fast, not wearing seat belts, etc.

19 Abstinence Avoiding harmful behaviors Harmful behaviors include:
Tobacco use Alcohol use Other drug use Sex before marriage
