French and Indian War Unit 2

Why do we care about the French and Indians fighting? France and Native American allies VS Great Britain and the Colonists France was G.B. biggest rival in the 1750s – Major area of contention in the America: The Ohio River Valley

British and Colonists = BFF Colonists still considered themselves British Wanted to expand the colonies westward because the Atlantic seaboard was getting crowded

Quebec, eh? France established colonies in what is present day Canada, specifically Quebec Claimed the entire Mississippi Valley for France and called it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV Differences: – Settlers were typically fur traders and Catholic priests – convert Natives – No desire to establish towns and raise families – Friendlier relations with Natives: Hurons, Ottawas, Ojibwas; traded with tribes; military alliances

Conflicts France and G. B. had already fought 2 inconclusive wars 1754 French built Fort Duquesne at the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio (Pittsburgh)

Conflicts The British had already granted 200,000 acres of land in the Ohio country to a group of wealthy planters. Governor of VA sent a militia to kick out the French – Led by George Washington (22 yrs old) Established an outpost (Ft. Necessity) about 40 miles from Duquesne Attacked in May 1754, French forced Washington to surrender Beginning of French and Indian War

The King has had enough British suffered many defeats during 1755 and 1756 causing colonists to question the competency of the military King George II appointed William Pitt to run his government in 1757, British began winning battles

That’s it, Fort Pitt Allied with the Iroquois 1759 war took a turn outside of Quebec British ambushed the French in the middle of the night resulting in a short but deadly battle Led to a British victory

Outcomes French and Indian War officially ended in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris – G. B. claimed all of North America east of the Mississippi River, including Florida (Spain) – Spain gained the French lands west of the Mississippi, including New Orleans French kept control of a few small islands near Newfoundland and in the West Indies Native Americans found it harder to bargain with British
