T YPES OF P OEMS Mrs. Cornish Seventh Grade Fred Lynn Middle School

Students will be able to identify conventional elements and characteristics of a variety of genres. SOL O BJECTIVE 7.5C

When I read poetry, I can identify the type of poem based on its characteristics, at least 4 out of every 5 instances. L EARNING T ARGET

H AIKU  3 line Japanese form  The first and third lines have 5 syllables each  The second line has 7 syllables  No rhyme  Usually about nature  Green and speckled legs, Hop on logs and lily pads Splash in cool water.  Solitary moon Resting against the treetops Winter is over

C OUPLET  2 lines of poetry that work together as a unit  The lines often rhyme and are called a “rhyming couplet” I got a pencil for a test. I'm really trying to do my best. The football coach is my dad, For this fact I'm very glad.

He fell off a dock And sunk like a rock. And that was the end of him.

F REE VERSE  Has no strict structure  Lines of varying length  May or not rhyme Technology It would be technology If I wrote this poem on a computer. It would be technology If Everything was digital. It would be technology If People invented new things. But... I like the way the world is now.

C ONCRETE  Forms a picture of the topic or shape that it is about a prism of sadness a piece of soul falls from the windows of the house where you live trickling droplets of emotion too hard to handle finally let go relieving the strain of your pain they fall from your eyes like rain until you are totally drained so you can rise up again to play the game

A CROSTIC  Can be about any subject  The letters of the subject are written against the left margin of the page and then words, phrases or sentences that start with that letter are created for the lines An acrostic poem Creates a challenge Random words on a theme Or whole sentences that rhyme Select your words carefully To form a word from top to bottom Is the aim of this poetry style Choose a word, then go!

Q UATRAIN  Four lined poem  Has a specific rhyme scheme:  abab  aabb  abba There is a pumpkin on the porch, Its carved face is scary, It is bright as a torch, And is sparkling like a fairy.

B ALLAD  Tells a story, usually a love story  Includes at least one four line quatrain stanza with the ABCB rhyme scheme A POEM IS A LITTLE PATH A poem is a little path That leads you through the trees. It takes you to the cliffs and shores, To anywhere you please. Follow it and trust your way With mind and heart as one, And when the journey's over, You'll find you've just begun.
