3 Starter #1 How many of you have ever read limerick poetry? If you have, can you explain to the rest of the class what a limerick is? A limerick is a humorous five-line poem that always follows this pattern: * Three long lines that rhyme (lines 1, 2, and 5) * Two short lines that rhyme (lines 3 and 4) * It also follows a strict pattern of beats.

4 Starter #2 How do you write a limerick? Here’s the formula.... Beats Pattern Rhyme Scheme Line 1: da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) A Line 2: da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) A Line 3: da DUM da da DUM (2 DUMS) B Line 4: da DUM da da DUM (2 DUMS) B Line 5: da DUM da da DUM da da DUM (3 DUMS) A

5 Starter #3 Here are some examples of limericks.... There once was a fellow named Tim Whose dad never taught him to swim. He fell off a dock And sunk like a rock And that was the end of him. There was an old man from Peru who dreamed he was eating his shoe. He awoke in the night with a terrible fright And found out that it was quite true.

6 Starter #4 Now it’s your turn. Your poem will be graded on the following: Correct number of lines Five Correct rhyme scheme AABBA Correct beat pattern Da DUM, da da DUM, da da DUM (1,2,5) Da DUM, da da DUM (3,4) Correct spellings Correct punctuation when needed Correct tone...
