General Information Children may arrive at school from 8.40am. Children to go into play ground past the silver gates. Parents are then encouraged to move off the yard. Whistle is blown at 8.50 for children to come in to the school. The register is taken at 9am and the main black gates are closed. If you arrive after the gate is closed please take your child to the office to be registered. School ends at 3.15pm for the children in year 1. The green gates are opened at Lessons are still taking place so please stay back from the classroom windows. If you are late your child may be put in After School Club and you may be charged. We will ring you before this happens, so please make sure that your contact details are correct. Data collection are coming home today. All uniform and PE kit should be clearly named! PE kit should be in school at all times as PE days may vary. Jewellery should not be worn. Every child has a communication diary – this is used in school and at home.

School Uniform Information is available in the front of the communication diary and on the school website. Hair bobble and headbands – children NEED to have their hair tied back. Hair pieces need to be small and follow the school colours – red, white or black. All items must be labelled or we will write their names in. Children can wear trainers but they must be BLACK!

P.E Kit Team coloured t-shirt Black shorts Black pumps In winter a black tracksuit can be worn. Children do not always get changed into their PE kits for PE, but always change footwear.

Our Curriculum Literacy Numeracy Science Phonics – daily Guided reading sessions Topic afternoons – Geography, History, Music, Art, DT ICT RE/ PSHE – taught in key worker time. PE Assemblies Access to indoor and outdoor provision.

What are we learning this half term ? Topic webs are available on the website – Child led learning. Literacy- lists, captions, labels, stories by the same author. Science- The Human body. Geography Art- Colouring and painting skills. Music- Singing skills and performing. PSHE- Making a positive contribution. RE – Buddisum Our theme this half term is Books and Authors – Nick Butterworth – Percy the Park Keeper! Children can bring in items related to the topic.

Literacy Reading Writing (including Big Write) Speaking and listening Phonics

Talk Homework and Big Write Launched in class to the children on a Thursday afternoon and the children write on a Monday morning. Paper copy sent home and is on the school website. The emphasis is talk! Come with lots of ideas ! The children do not need to write anything at home! In class the children will talk about the theme and generate ideas together before they write independently. Springboard Independent writing – children who need adult support will receive it. Children write whilst listening to calming music.

Strategies for Reading Phonics first- ‘Sound it out’ Picture clues Talk about the picture before reading the text. Look at the initial letter and predict using the previous sentence, picture or the title of the book. Read to the end of the line and return to predict. Recognise tricky words – not to be sounded out! To read back over what they have sounded out. Does the sentence make sense? Discuss what the child has read – comprehension Make predictions about the characters and the story. CHILDREN DON’T HAVE TO READ ONLY SCHOOL BOOKS – cereal boxes, road signs, newspaper, magazines, menus. Let the children see you reading!!!!

Targets Personal targets in the children’s communication diaries. Each child is set personal targets. These are based on their EYFS scores and teacher assessment.

Phonics Phases 3-6 Blending for reading – sound buttons and blending finger. Segment for spelling – ROBOT ARMS Tricky words – the, are, they. Spelling homework sent home on a Friday, children to practise spelling these at home as well as being taught them during their phonics sessions through the week. Children tested on a Friday.

Numeracy Maths is very practical in school and is recorded through photographs, post it notes, skills sheets etc. Maths is made as real as possible for the children to make links to the real world. Shape, Space and Measures – describing 3D and 2D shapes and their properties. Measuring, ordering and comparing items. Order events. Counting – very practical – being done every day. Writing numbers, reading numbers, addition and subtractions, 1 more, 1 less etc. Calculations Data handling - sort and classify objects Using and applying Big Maths – We are hoping to start this after October half term.

Science Scientific Enquiry: Planning, obtaining then presenting evidence and evaluating. Life processes and living things: Humans and other animals, plants and variation. Materials and their properties: Grouping materials and changing materials. Physical processes: Electricity, light and sound and forces.

Continuous Provision

Key Workers Help children settle into their new classroom. Keep an extra special eye on how children are settling during the first couple of weeks. Observe and support children learning in continuous provision. Help support home/school partnership. Keep the communication books up to date. Your child’s key worker is identified in their communication diary. Key worker time.

Topics to be covered over the year Term 1 - Books and Authors – Nick Butterworth Term 2 – In the Style of…. Term 3 - Kingdoms Transition Week. Child led curriculum – parents to get involved, children to bring in items related to the topic only! Celebrations – Certificates, badges, trophies etc. Bowerham Best- Golden time

Homework Big Talk for Big Write homework is sent home as a paper copy every Thursday. You will also find it on the website,in the Year 1 area. The topic is to be discussed ready for the following Monday. Children will struggle with their Big Write if they do not do their Big Talk homework. Reading – children should read for at least 5 minutes every day. Please write a comment in the Communication Book each time your child has read and let us know when the book needs to be changed. Numeracy/literacy/topic – we will be sending home a task each week. This will be sent in a homework folder on a Thursday to be retuned the following Tuesday. Spellings – spellings related to your child’s phonics phase are sent home every Friday to be tested the following Friday. We would encourage you to help your child with their work. Please let us know if there are any problems. HOMEWORK CLUB MONDAY 3.15PM – 3.50PM

Reading Please try to hear your child read each day for at least 5 minutes a day. This does not have to be their school reading book. Please record in their Communication Diaries which pages you have heard them read too. Reading books can be changed every day if you are happy with the way they have read their book to you. It must be clear in the diary that the book needs changing. Please send reading bags and Communication Diaries to school every day as your child may need to read in school.

School Dinners Dinner time is 12-1 Dinner register Pudding Talk about the lunch menu with your child Children who are entitled to free school meals still need to apply for these – school receives money according to this information.

Harvest Festival THURSDAY 9.15am in the lower hall Children are supporting the Olive Branch Charity. Donations - tuna, corned beef, ham, sausages, minced beef, stewed steak, ready meals, meatballs, spaghetti, soup, tomatoes, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, rice pudding, coffee (4oz), tea bags, long life milk, packets of rice and pasta.
