Out of Class Essay 2

Block Quoting Formatting quotations according to the MLA guidelines Use the block quotation format for quotations more than four lines long: In most cases, use a colon to introduce the quotation. Indent the quotation one inch from the left margin. Double-space the quotation. Do not use quotation marks. Place the parenthetical citation (author and page number) after the period (or other mark of punctuation) that closes the block quotation.

In-text citation (Author’s last name #). “ngfhksgdfnbDFHLkdzfhlDFghasf “ (Gladwell 333). “nzbSDhdfghAKGDhfbvchGJDyas” (Baron 320).

Topic Sentences (Claims) Unlike an essay that we read and analyze for class, you cannot expect your reader to look for the main idea of your paragraph. YOU need to state it, YOU need to guide your reader through your ideas as explicitly as possible.

DO NOT WRITE ABOUT THE TEXTS IN ISOLATION Body Paragraph Structure CLAIM: Topic Sentence that is about the main idea in this paragraph. This is your claim. Introduce the first piece of evidence QUOTE A ANALYSIS of Quote A Introduce the second piece of evidence Quote B ANALYSIS of Quote B Connection of quote A and B while connecting back to the claim AND YOUR THESIS STATEMENT

Keep the purpose of your paper in mind Remember, YOU know what you are writing and what you are trying to prove, but your reader doesn’t. This is why as you write, you must connect every point back to the thesis statement. Explain to the reader how each body paragraph connects to the thesis. Walk the reader through your argument by reminding of them of what you are proving throughout.

Summary VS. Analysis SUMMARY ANALYSIS CLAIM: One of the author’s main points or argument. EVIDENCE: One of the author’s quotes that relates to that argument. WARRANT: An explanation of how that quote relates to the author’s argument. CLAIM: Your OWN original idea that is not 100% present in either text. EVIDENCE: A quote from the text. WARRANT: An explanation of HOW you interpreted the quote from the text, and how this interpretation supports your IDEA

The purpose of these essays The idea you should master and understand is that one text can serve as a theoretical framework through which to interpret a second text. For example: Gladwell creates these frameworks such as weak tie vs. strong tie, high risk vs. low risk, that he uses to develop his argument. You can USE his theories and these frameworks that he has developed in order to reveal a new understanding of said text. How do you see these ideas in another work? Does it change the way in which you understand Baron’s argument?

ANALYSIS Sample analysis in body paragraph

Conclusions: So what? Who cares? Baseball is America's national pastime. Bernini was the best sculptor of the Baroque period. Genetically modified foods have kept millions of Africans alive. So what? Who Cares? Why does any of this matter?
