Aim: What should the final research paper look like? Note: Your final research paper is due Monday, April 27 th. If you will be absent on that day, you will need to hand in your paper before. No exceptions! You cannot email me your paper. You must hand in a hard copy. Please plan accordingly.

The Basics Your paper should be 5 pages long – 4 pages of written research and analysis and the last page for your Works Cited. You should look at the paper as a formal, written extension of your Oral Presentation.MLA Format must be followed. There is no need for a separate cover page. You will begin with the same formatted heading from your Annotated Bibliography and then begin your paper immediately after. You may include a title, but it is optional. Your last name and page # should appear on every page on the upper right hand corner. This can be done by including a header in your Word document.

How should you structure your paper? Introduction – (1-2 paragraphs) Introduce your topic and research question. Make sure the reader is properly informed of your primary text and how you will use your secondary sources for analysis. Your thesis statement should be clear! Body – (4- 8 paragraphs) Break down the body of your paper by focusing on one secondary source at a time. Make sure to introduce each secondary source first and then tie in it’s connection to your primary text. Conclusion – (1-2 paragraphs) You should end your paper with a clear sense of your final analysis and evaluation of your topic. Essentially, the answer to your research question should be clear. Make sure your reader is aware of what your research yielded and what your final thoughts on your topic are.

In-text Citation or Parenthetical Citation According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184), though others disagree. According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184).Is it possible that dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184)? To indicate short quotations (fewer than four typed lines of prose or three lines of verse) in your text, enclose the quotation within double quotation marks. Provide the author and specific page citation (in the case of verse, provide line numbers) in the text, and include a complete reference on the Works Cited page. Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and semicolons should appear after the parenthetical citation. Question marks and exclamation points should appear within the quotation marks if they are a part of the quoted passage but after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of your text. For example, when quoting short passages of prose, use the following examples:

Parenthetical Citation – Long Quotes Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration: They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even in their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. Inquiries were made as to how it got there; I was obliged to confess, and in recompense for my cowardice and inhumanity was sent out of the house. (Bronte 78) For quotations that are more than four lines of prose or three lines of verse, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from the left margin; maintain double-spacing. Only indent the first line of the quotation by an additional quarter inch if you are citing multiple paragraphs. Your parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark. For example, when citing more than four lines of prose, use the following examples:

Works Cited Page This page will simply provide a list of your sources. You should include everything you used including your primary source. (Remember, your Annotated Bibliography only listed your secondary sources.) The list should be alphabetical order. Remember to indent after the first line 12 font – Times New Roman – double spaced – 1 inch margins – last name and page # in header
