3 THESIS STATEMENT REVIEW The thesis sentence is the most important sentence in an essay -- the one ruling idea you will support in the body of your paper. It serves as a plan for the writer and a “road map” for the reader. In a sense, it is a contract between the writer and the reader. The writer promises to prove the thesis to the reader. The thesis is the writer’s opinion -- an argument, not a fact.

4 ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY THESIS STATEMENT DEVELOPMENT INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH: 5 SENTENCES THESIS STATEMENT If I believe that the American dream still exists/does not exist…  What works do I feel strongly about using?  How did these works help shape my opinion about the American Dream?  EXAMPLE:

5 CONTINUE TO FREEWRITE  Would the author/creator agree with your position? Disagree? Why?  Would the author/creator want to qualify your position? Why and how?  Does the author make a specific claim about your issue?  What assumptions or beliefs are either spoken or unspoken (implicit or explicit)?

6 CRAFT YOUR INTRODUCTION Think about defining what the American Dream is and what it is not…what you think it means and how certain texts that you will use relate to your opinion. Make a big statement and then use your essay body paragraphs to prove your opinion by using the texts to help support your commentary and analysis.
