Karibu- Welcome We hope you find the note left by your child a warm surprise as you are away from them tonight. Please feel free to leave them a note. We will begin shortly

Curriculum Night Mrs. Kendall’s Tribal Kids September 2012

Come and Get It….Read All About It! The Back to School Newsletter is what I call the quick reference guide to fourth grade. You will find information about: –Homework –Expectations –Grades –Content –Communication It is also posted on the classroom website

Bird By Bird Buddy The first three Habits: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind and Put First Things First This is a short story that really illustrates for kids the idea of prioritizing your time. We always talk about prioritizing our time in class and out. Everyone is really busy with sports, work, school, etc. Fourth grade is a really busy year and full of transition for our students. It will be important to remind them of this from time to time.

Testing Schedule and Skyward We conduct DIBELS testing three times a year at the trimesters. Our MSP testing dates will be in May Skyward grade book is used by elementary teachers this year to record semester grades for the report card. I will post all missing assignments on the Friday of that week. A monthly progress report will go home with all missing assignments on it.

These are four words that I hope you are familiar with at this point. Conformity and Democracy are behaviors we want to see in our classroom. If you child comes home with a D in behavior it is Awesome. Consequences reviewed in both the curriculum newsletter and the student handbook –Verbal warning –Loss of time in the classroom –Time in a buddy classroom –Loss of recess –Referral to office Anarchy, Bully, Conformity, Democracy

Curriculum Guide TRIBE Notebook –Tracking… Responsibility- they will keep a copy of their job applications as well as their bucket envelopes for those very special bucket fillers they receive. Intelligence- we will be monitoring reading fluency, writing, math facts, math units, and some reading comprehension Behavior- they will be charting their behavior within their notebooks. This will include any think sheets, office referrals and notes to parents. Expectation- students will have the opportunity to set goals for themselves and reflect upon those goals both academic and personal.

Curriculum Guide This will be an in depth perspective of our year together. Spelling –Our students are leveled based on their spelling pattern abilities. They will move through as the curriculum moves. Reading –Our students need to be reading every night for thirty minutes. If they are “practicing” their time management and have more time to read on Monday than Tuesday, they can do so and then subtract the time for the next day. –They will periodically have a response to complete following their thirty minutes of reading Math –They will start bringing home their Rocket Math folder to practice with you each night. It MUST be returned the next day so that they can practice and take a test. –The remembering is always a requirement and the homework will be assigned based on completion of the lesson.

Curriculum Guide Daily Work –Any daily work that comes home in the homework folder is because our students were unable to finish in the time allotted. Bi-Weekly Newsletters –This will be a key communication tool between home and school. –It is due the Monday after it is given, giving your family the weekend to read and discuss it. Home Learning –Independent Projects and Enrichment opportunities will be the only home learning that is given without time to work on it in class. Spelling and Math homework are started within the subject matter. Reading responses may be assigned without time to work on it because it is for their nightly reading.

Communication How I will be in touch with you –Planner –Notes in folder –Newsletter – –Phone call How you can be in touch with me –Notes –Planner – –Phone call –Come visit our classroom before or after school

Thank You So Much for Supporting Your Child in Their Experience at Mt. Pilchuck Your students will be looking for their resources in the morning so I would ask that you put it all back in their desks. They are looking forward to seeing your reaction to their note, so we would encourage you to take that home with your hugs and kisses….and don’t forget to leave them a note
