The Cat and the Rat By Ed Young

Setting : China more than 5,000 years ago Conflict: Emperor of China decided to hold a race among the animals in the land. The prize for the first twelve animals to cross the finish line is a year in the Chinese zodiac. Cat and Rat are two of the smallest animals in the race and their conflict is how to out smart others to win the race.

Characters Emperor- sets up the race for the zodiac calendar. Cat- resourceful and positive, comes up with a plan to win the race by catching a ride on the back of Buffalo. She gets tricked by Rat when she wakes up and Rat pushes her into the water. In the end loses the race Rat- tricky mean greedy friend who pushes cat into the water, wins the race by deceit. Cat and Rat are forever enemies after this race.
