13 Broken Chain NOTES   Setting- Fresno California in a Mexican American neighborhood in the 1980s

14 Summary   On Saturday, Alfonso, who is painfully self- conscious, meets a girl when he rescues her little brother. He ask her to go bike riding with him on Monday. Alfonso asks his older brother Ernie, to lend him his bike for Sandra to use, but Ernie refuses. On Monday, Alfonso breaks his bike chain and is left with no bike at all. At the last minute Ernie shows up and lends his bike to Alfonso after all. Sandra doesn’t mind riding on the crossbar. She and Alfonso have fun anyway.

15   Alfonso- 7 th grade Mexican American boy who is not happy with the way he looks. He tries hard to fix the things he does not like. His family does not have the money to buy him what he wants so he goes to other means. He takes care of his bike unlike his brother Ernie until one day his bike breaks. He comes across a girl who likes him for him and his brother helps him on in the end.

22 Literary Terms   Setting- the time and place in which the events of a short story occur.   Narrator – the person who tells the story   Point of view- the relationship of the narrator to the story. There are three points of view:   First-person: told by a character   Third-person limited: the narrator is outside the story and reveals the thoughts of only one character   Third-person omniscient: Narrator is outside the story but reveals the thoughts of all characters

23 Plot   The sequence of events in a story, novel, or play. Plot Map

24   Exposition- Alfonso is a young boy who is unhappy with the way he looks   Rising Actions-Alfonso pushes his teeth together in hopes of straightening them, meets a girl name Sandra then ask her to go bike riding.   Climax- Alfonso breaks his bike chain   Falling Actions- Alfonso ask to use his brother’s bike. At first Ernie says no and Alfonso has to tell Sandra that their date is canceled. But in the end Ernie does give Alfonso the bike.   Resolution- Alfonso gets together with Sandra, who seems to like him and not mind his crooked teeth. He feels comfortable around her.
