 Investigate the affects of direct instruction with visual supports on students’ ability to initiate interaction with others in the special education and regular education classroom.

 4 second grade students with special needs in a special education elementary classroom  Each student has an identified disability.

 Daily 30 minute lesson for 12 consecutive weeks  Taught students how to make and sustain eye contact with others through turn taking activities and initiating interaction with others

 Social Skills Improvement System ©  Anecdotal notes  Teacher surveys  Videotaped observations

Regular Education Classroom  Students’ ability to initiate interactions remained the same. Special Education Classroom  Students’ ability to initiate interactions increased.
