2 WELCOME!! TO THE IMMERSION COURSE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS OF ENGLISH

3 Main objectives of the immersion course The participants will activate and improve their oral fluency update and expand their general English knowledge through dynamic and diverse activities with special emphasis on o formal English o English in the classroom o slang and contemporary English

4 Emphasis on oral skills Listening comprehension Spoken production Spoken interaction

5 Required tasks Final Project Mini-lessons (max. 15 min.) taught by groups of 3 (25% of the course grade)  Apply the language and skills practiced in class Reflective journal  Write and turn in a journal (25% of the course grade)(Memoria)  Reflect back on what you have learned and practiced  Evaluate the experience

7 DAILY SCHEDULES AND MODEL CONTENT

9 Warm up  Fun activities to recycle materials from previous days and to get to know your classmates. Daily Themes  The English we learn  The English we teach  English in the street  English in the media and contemporary culture Input and Hands on Practice Themes such as the following will be used as a springboard for language input, conversation and practical activities: Slang Contemporary Culture The Language of the Media The Internet

10 Skills and tasks such as the following will be incorporated in the daily activities: Intonation and pronunciation in order to communicate clearly at the same time as increase comprehension How to use your voice to gain and maintain audience attention Making suggestions / Giving Feedback / Evaluating Learning strategies Learning, recycling, incorporating vocabulary into your own use of English as well as ideas for working with vocabulary in the classroom Referring to visual aids; Working with PowerPoint slides

11 After the break Face to Face 30 minute sessions 3 students / 1 teacher (three 30 minute sessions during the week). Large group session: 12 students / 1 teacher  Speaking skills, discussion and the exchange of ideas.  Themes in education (students, teachers, schools, curriculum)  Share experiences related to teaching  Resources you use / Tips & Tricks Last part of this period Work on final project (mini-lesson) in groups of 3 Reflect on the day and make notes for the required Reflective Journal (Memoria)

12 The Role of the Teachers in the English Immersion Course In this course the classroom teachers’ role is to facilitate and encourage conversation and communication. As a general rule she/he will make note of important or common errors and review them with the whole class at the end of different sessions. However, she/he will not interrupt communication to correct you.

13 What are we trying to do in this course? C O M M U N I C A T E ! You all have a lot of English grammar, vocabulary, rules of all kinds in your heads. Now it is time to put this knowledge to work! The main objective of these 5 days is to provide you with the opportunity to practice, practice, and then practice some more!
