This is the MAKEUP PowerPoint for those who missed the in-person training… April 22, 1-4 PM Forum-101 Your work for this MAKEUP is due to Mrs. Pierce on Monday, April 25 before 5 PM. Please note: Any handouts you need will be posted on the SI website directly beneath this PowerPoint.

SI Leader Training #4 Helping Students Get Ready for Finals April 22, :00-4:00 pm Forum-101

What single words come to mind when you think of final exams? 1. Write a list of 10 words. On your own lined paper…

Paperwork Compliance Report About 85% of you…always faithful! Thank you :=) Approximately 15 Leaders…consistently negligent 2. On the same lined paper, write your answers to these questions: a. Can you think of any professional job (that requires an academic degree) that does NOT entail some degree of paperwork? b. Should the SI Program rehire Leaders that don’t regularly turn in their Weekly Time Logs or Session Plans? Why or why not? c. What are some ways to make sure you get your paper- work done each week?

Status of Observations I’m not making good progress. Will do my best to get to you If you REALLY want me to come, please me, and I will put your session at the top of my list. I have really enjoyed the sessions I’ve been able to fit in. I will also be sending out an evaluation form to your SI professor and will forward a copy of it to you if I am given permission to share it.

SI Leader Evaluation by Instructor FORM 3.What is your opinion of this form? Does it appear to offer instructions a chance to give a fair assessment of their SI Leaders? On same lined paper…

End-of-Semester SI Student Surveys Will be given to ALL students in your SI class Pick up copies in SI area before May 2 Administer week of May 2-6 Return to SI Assistant on May 9 Considering trying to do them online through a website called Survey Monkey

End-of-Semester SI Student Surveys 4. Which type of survey would you prefer to have the students in your SI class complete: a paper one or an online one? Why? Also on same lined paper…

Information for SI Leaders During Summer 2016 Write this down! SI Leader Summer Trainings Training #1: June 10 (Fri), 1-4 pm Training #2: June 24 (Fri), 1-4 pm Paid Mandatory

Information for SI Leaders During Summer 2016 (continued) Days/Hours of SI Sessions for June 13-August 12 Mondays through Thursdays, 11 AM-7 PM Mrs. Pierce’s General Hours: Mondays through Fridays, 9 AM-5 PM No more use of Sunshine Room or SS-136 We’ll use our own 5 rooms, Library 129 and 130, and available classrooms

Did you write those important dates down in your planner or plug them into your phone?

What is the most important tool to get ready for Finals Week?? YOUR 5-DAY STUDY PLAN….WHAT!? YOU DON’T HAVE ONE??? Don’t worry…We will help you!!

Major Study Tool The 5-Day Study Plan

Please print this out from the SI website. It’s directly under the PowerPoint #4 MAKEUP link.

Set a timeline just like this one on the Weekly Calendar! Use your own coursework to fill in the information you’ll study. MONDAYTUESDAYWEDNESDAYTHURSDAYFRIDAY DAY 1DAY 2DAY 3DAY 4DAY 5 Days Review textbook chapters and lecture notes Review textbook chapters and lecture notes (divided up evenly over 4 days) Compile a summary of information covered that day Compile a summary of information covered that day Day 5 Spend reviewing the summaries created on Days Spend reviewing the summaries created on Days 1 - 4

Time Day of Week Monday DAY ONE Tuesday DAY TWO Wednesday DAY THREE Thursday DAY FOUR Friday DAY FIVE 9-10 AM Write summary notes for Ch. 1-3 Write summary notes for Ch Review Summary AM Summarize lecture notes from Jan 24-Feb 18 Summarize lecture notes from Mar 8-Apr 1 notes created on Days PM Write summary notes for Ch. 4-6 Write summary notes for Ch Summarize lecture notes from Feb 21- Mar 5 Summarize lecture notes from Apr 4-Apr 28 Example of How Your Study Plan Might Look

Why try the 5-Day Study Plan? Because it… Prevents cramming Spreads studying over time Gives your brain time to absorb information Builds confidence Prevents stress

Now finish up your own 5-Day Study Plan for one of your upcoming finals. Use the Weekly Calendar you printed out to put down your plan. I’ve done an example for you if I were doing a 5-Day Study Plan for a final on how to be an SI Leader—see next slide.

Sample 5-Day Study Plan on How to be an Effective SI Leader

Other Study Strategies What do YOU do to make textbook information stick? Just staring at a page of notes doesn’t work! What techniques have you tried with your SI students? How do you know when you have studied enough? Why do many BC students fail?

Create your own poster to advertise ONE effective study strategy… 1.You can use an 8 1/2 ” X 11” piece of white printer paper. 2.I will display your poster in our SI area. The best posters are: COLORFUL, CATCHY, with SIMPLE PHRASES See my example slide coming up!

Sample Poster for the 5-Day Study Plan

Finals are coming! Are you ready? Study smarter, not harder Try the 5-Day Study Plan Don’t cram the night before Divide up the information you need to know over 5 days Shorter, more frequent study leads to a better memory!

SI Video Dezi Von Manos talks about Supplemental Instruction Write the following on lined paper. 5. Watch the above video on YouTube. Then write a brief summary of what the video discussed. How else could we use video clips like this one to promote and advertise the benefits of SI?

You are finished! Here’s a checklist of what you need to turn in by April 25 before 5 PM.  Questions 1-5 answered on lined paper  Your own 5-Day Study Plan  Your own poster (on printer paper) advertising a study strategy. *Please staple all pages together and hand in to Mrs. Pierce.
