16 Other Study Strategies
Why do many BC students fail? Other Study Strategies Just staring at a page of notes doesn’t work! What do YOU do to make textbook information stick? How do you know when you have studied enough? What techniques have you tried with your SI students?

17 Question 3: Create your own poster to advertise ONE effective study strategy…(Use same lined paper or blank piece of 8 ½ X 11 white paper.) It can be any strategy…does not have to be the 5-Day Study Plan! The best posters are: COLORFUL, CATCHY, with SIMPLE PHRASES

18 Sample Poster for the 5-Day Study Plan The following is my idea…

19 Finals are coming! Are you ready?
Try the 5-Day Study Plan Don’t cram the night before Shorter, more frequent study leads to a better memory! Divide up the information you need to know over 5 days Study smarter, not harder

20 Another Way to Prepare Your Students for Finals
Show them Habits of Mind videos! Then be sure to discuss what they mean for your students. Give them a task to do while watching them. You can check out one of our laptops to use. The video clips are short and are on the main BC website (or I can send you my slide with links).

21 Question 4: Task to go with Habits of Mind videos—On your lined paper, copy down this chart, and then fill it in as you watch the clips on the next slide. Video Clip Title Main Point that Grabbed Me How I can Apply it to Studying for My Finals 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

22 Habits of Mind Videos: Striving for Excellence Being Focused
Check out a laptop, show these to your students, and then have a discussion about them! Striving for Excellence Being Focused Being Organized I Being Organized II Taking Good Notes

23 Another Way to Prepare Your Students for Finals
Address the issue of Test Taking Anxiety!

24 Test Anxiety Profile Before During After An Exam
Directions: Read through each column of thoughts, putting a check next to the ones that tend to pass through your head during the exam process. When you’ve finished, take a look at where the majority of your check- arks lie. If your thought processes are predominantly negative, then you need to make a conscious effort to convert them to positive ones (after you’ve studied your heart out, of course!). Before During After An Exam

25 BIG No-No!! NEGATIVE THOUGHTS Before Big Exam I will never pass.
I’m going to panic, as usual. If only I could get out of it… There’s far too much to learn before the test. Why didn’t I study more? Question 5: List one of your negative thoughts: ________________________________ BIG No-No!!

26 BIG No-No!! NEGATIVE THOUGHTS During Big Exam
Everyone else is working faster than I am. I am just plain stupid. People will notice my hands trembling. My mind is a total blank. I might as well give up. What’s the use? Other students are turning in their tests already. Question 6: Your negative thought?______________ BIG No-No!!

27 BIG No-No!! NEGATIVE THOUGHTS After Big Exam I knew I would blow it.
I’m going to flunk out. There’s something wrong with my mind. What will my parents say? Question 7: One more from you:___________________________ BIG No-No!!

28 YES, Think This Way. POSITIVE THOUGHTS Before Big Exam
I don’t have to be perfect. Worrying won’t help anything. Try not to take this too seriously. I can manage the situation. Easy does it—it’s only a test. Question 8: Another positive statement? _____________________________________ YES, Think This Way.

29 YES, Think This Way. POSITIVE THOUGHTS During Big Exam
Don’t think about the others—focus on the test. I don’t need to prove myself. Just take one step at a time. I’m feeling tense; it’s time to relax myself. Getting upset won’t help. Use the time that’s left—focus on the test.. Question 9: How else are you focused on the positive? ___________________________ YES, Think This Way.

30 YES, Think This Way. POSITIVE THOUGHTS After Big Exam
I knew I could get through. It could have been a lot worse. I handled it pretty well. Good—I did it! I may not be the best, but I’m not the worst either. Question 10: Another positive thought that you often have? __________________________________________________ YES, Think This Way.

31 Practice Counteracting Negativity
Directions: For each negative statement, write a positive statement that directly counteracts it. Ex.: Negative—This is too much for me. I can’t do it! Positive—Yes, you can. Break it down into pieces you can manage more easily. Negative Statements: Question 11: I’m going to forget all the stuff I studied. Question 12: If I don’t pass this class, my world will come to an end. Question 13: Oh no! I’m not understanding any question I’m looking at! Question 14: None of this was covered in class…am I in the right room?! Question 15: I’m such a pathetic excuse for a human being. Question 16: The guy next to me is so much smarter than I am. Question 17: Maybe I’m only cut out to work at McDonald’s.

32 Brainstorm 3 more ways to study for finals that you can teach your students: Question 18: Study Strategy 1 Question 19: Study Strategy 2 Question 20: Study Strategy 3

33 Question 21: Create a Session Plan (still on your lined paper—include the following 3 parts) that you can actually use with your students the week before finals. Warm-Up: Can be a question, such as: How do you normally prepare for finals? Workout: This is where you show them your best strategy and have them practice it. (You can use 1 from the previous slide, if you like) Cool-Down: You can ask them what they thought of the strategy and if they will truly commit to trying it out, etc.

34 Cool-Down: Staple all your answers to the questions together.
Be sure your name is on it, and it’s entitled “Makeup Training #4.” Turn in on Monday, 11/21 by 5 PM Count 2 hours of time in your WTE and on your Weekly Time Log.
