1 SI Leader Training #3 MAKEUP!
Due Monday, April 3 By 5 PM Friday, April 1 1:00-4:00 PM Forum-101

2 Here’s the Agenda we followed, which I have adapted
slightly for this MAKEUP: 1. Warm-up: Fill out the Habits of Mind Chart (acronym POSSIBLE). Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS) at BC: What is it, and how can students get involved? 3. SI Paperwork: How’s it working out for you? 4. SI Leader Observations: Everything you need to know Stretch Break #1 Strategies for SI Sessions 7. Stretch Break #2 8. Video clips: Interview of Desi Von Manos on SI 9. Cool-Down

3 Habits of Mind Chart To figure out what each letter stands for and learn more about Habits of Mind, go to the BC webpage: Print out this handout, fill it in using the example for P, and staple it with the rest of the papers you will turn in for this MAKEUP. PRINT HABITS OF MIND CHART

4 Guest Speaker: Terri Goldstein Director, Disabled Students Programs
During the training, we had the guest speaker pictured below. Since you weren’t able to hear her talk, go to the DSPS website and find out what it’s all about. Then answer the following questions on the next slide: Guest Speaker: Terri Goldstein Director, Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS)

5 Assignment: Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS)
On your own sheet of lined paper, please answer the following questions: What is the purpose of DSPS at BC? Imagine that you encounter a student who comes regularly to your SI sessions but seems to struggle harder than the other students and doesn’t grasp con- cepts nearly as quickly as the others. You suspect the student may have a learn- ing disability, but how can you go about referring the student for help without seeming overly intrusive or downright offensive?

6 Comments on Paperwork Completeness Accuracy Timeliness

7 SI Paperwork: How’s it workin’ out for you?
The fact is…paperwork is a necessary part of every career, especially professional ones (for which, I happily presume, you are destined!) On the same lined piece of paper you’ve been using, provide your answers to the following questions regarding our SI paperwork: What is the point of the Weekly Time Log? What is the point of the SI Session Plans? What’s your greatest challenge in doing your paperwork? How can you improve the way you’re handling it? (OR, if you’ve got it down to a science, what’s the secret to your success?)

8 SI Leader Observations Notice word observation as opposed
to evaluation. 3 Components: I come by unannounced for approx. 15 min. and take notes while you carry on as normal. I complete the Observation Form. You come to my office, read it over, add any comments of your own, and sign off.

9 Here’s What the SI Leader Observation Form Looks Like:

10 Stretch Break #1 Follow video clip

11 SI Session Strategies Access the 1-page form below and fill it
out, focusing on 1 SI session strategy that has worked well for you this semester. Print it out and staple it to the other papers that you turn in for this MAKEUP. Print SI Leader Effective Tutoring Strategy Form

12 Stretch Break #2 Try this clip.

13 Did you know that BC SI was featured in a recent interview and video clip?
Interview of Desi Von Manos on Equity TV Clip on Supplemental Instruction

14 Your Reaction to the SI Video Clips
What did you think of the 2 video clips that you just watched? Did they adequately explain SI? If you were a student who had no knowledge of SI prior to watching these 2 clips, would you now be motivated to attend SI? I’m considering creating a new commercial for SI, some- thing catchy and humorous, that portrays us as the cool place to study on campus for students who are serious about their academic success. In a short paragraph, use your imagination to describe the kind of com- mercial that you think we should have to promote SI. We just might adopt your idea!

15 Cool-Down Congrats! You’re done!
Be sure that your NAME, SI SUBJECT/PROFESSOR, and DATE are at the top of the first page. Your stapled packet should include: a. completed Habits of Mind Chart b. assignment: Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Questions #1, 2 answered on your own lined paper c. SI Paperwork: How’s it workin’ out for you? Questions #1, 2, 3, 4 answered on your own lined paper d. completed SI Leader Effective Tutoring Strategy form e. Your Reaction to the SI Video Clips On your Weekly Time Log and in Web Time Entry, put down 2 hours of work for this training, no matter how long it actually took. All makeups are worth 2 hours flat. All the world is my school and all humanity is my teacher.   ― George Whitman
