1 SUPER SUCCESS SERIES TIME MANAGEMENT VOL. 1
Introductions (30 sec each) Presenter: both

2 HELP! My Time Is So Unmanaged!
Do you find yourself forgetting assignments and missing deadlines? Do you put your studying off to the last minute? Do you really know how much time you have in a week? Presenter: Do any of these apply to you? First activity (how many hours in a week?)…. (5-7 min). Debrief- How many of you were surprised by the results? What do you notice about the number of hours you have during the week? What do you spend the most time on? Did you have enough time to study? Anything you want to change? (3-5 min)

3 How does this happen? Disorganization Lack of defined priorities/goals
Procrastination Presenter: Overview of methods to manage time. Disorganization- how to schedule your time. Priorities/goals- lists. Procrastination- ways to overcome.

4 Let’s Get organized! Schedules are your friend! Break it down:
By Semester When are my exams? When are projects due? By Week When should I start ? (Hint BEFORE due date) What weeks are “heavy” as far as responsibilities? By Day What time of day (are you working? Are you more productive at night?) How many hours a day? When should it be completed? (Hint BEFORE due date) Presenter: Explain that this is a way of organizing your brain and all your responsibilities. By Semester: Use your syllabus to record all your test dates, reading dates, quizzes, finals etc. Include days you have work, days you are volunteering, anything you wrote on that sheet we did earlier needs to be considered when getting organized. By Week: Once you know when you have to get things done you also need to consider, when do I need to start? When you look at your week and you notice, I have 1 quiz, two exams and a paper, wow!! That means you need to start a few weeks ahead of time to be able to manage all that at once. You should create a “start” date. By Day: Be mindful of when you work best. Are you a night owl? Are you an early bird? When do you think the best? That is when you should give yourself time to study. Or maybe when are you not working? When do you have a break between classes? How can you utilize your time to get stuff done? Try to estimate how long it will take you to do something. Usually, we under estimate the amount of time we need. Give yourself a due date earlier than the real due date so you can use other resources like the writing center. Carving out hours to do things makes it easier for you to stay focused and say no to other things. For example, you can’t go see the new avengers movie because you need to finish writing a paper. In your folder you will notice a few different types of methods to organize yourself. The first one is a semester calendar. You can put all your assignments, work hours, etc. on here. The second is a weekly scheduler. The weekly scheduler is more to organize your time. When do you have class? Work? Gym time? Etc.

5 Did You Know? You get outlook for FREE! Presenter:
Remind students that there are also apps that you can use to help you stay organized not just paper. Use what works for you! Students have free access to the outlook app .

6 And Finally…. PROCRASTINATION! Presenter:
Ask the group how many of them are procrastinators? What are some reasons that you procrastinate?

7 Overcoming Procrastination:
The Right brained way… Give yourself the option! Values/goals/actions? Why are you doing what you are doing? Presenter: Sometimes a schedule doesn’t work for everyone. Sometimes people need to give themselves options. I’m not a fan of being told what to do- I like choice- pick to not procrastinate if I don’t feel like I have to do something. Studies have shown that if people give themselves the choice to procrastinate, more often than not, they decide NOT to procrastinate. Also, Some people are Bigger Picture thinkers and need to see how the little things fit into their worldview. For our next exercise, I want you to think about you’re your over-all values. What do you find most important in the way you live and work? When were you happiest? What were you doing? Who were you with? Or think about when you felt most fulfilled and satisfied. What need or desire was fulfilled? How did it give you meaning? What else contributed to feeling fulfilled?

8 Study for math test-Ch. 3-6
Values: Growth Creativity Balance Goals: Graduate Find an awesome job Get involved at Metro Today: Study for math test-Ch. 3-6 Start internship application- 3 paragraphs to complete Biology Club meeting 6 pm How are these contributing to my bigger picture goals, priorities, and values? Make a list! Think about the big AND small pictures. Presenter: Think about your values. (creativity, perfection, growth, family, competitiveness are a few examples). Now consider your goals- what do you need to accomplish to live true to your values? what do you need to do to get there? How will you accomplish these goals? Write your goals down and keep them with you! I like this method because it’s not as restrictive as a tight schedule and it give me more meaning to overcome my procrastination. You may also find that you need to combine multiple methods to keep your self on track and that’s ok!

9 Summary & Evaluation What time management strategies did you learn today? Please fill out the evaluation- your input is very important! Questions?
