CERSC – RESULTS OF THE STARS EUROPE PROJECT 2 Legislation about road safety Convention on Road Traffic, Vienna, 1968 International written agreement designed to facilitate international road traffic and to increase road safety Convention was agreed upon at the United Nations Economic and Social Council's Conference on Road Traffic Chapter II, Art 7, (3) states "Drivers shall show extra care in relation to the most vulnerable road-users, such as pedestrians and cyclists and in particular children, elderly persons and the disabled.” Act I of 1988 On Road Traffic (Hungary) defines requirements for road design in relation to safety for all road users.

CERSC – RESULTS OF THE STARS EUROPE PROJECT 4 „Dangerizing” – teaching that cycling requires mandatory, constant and extra precautions (e.g. high-visibility clothes, over-sleeves) classifies cycling as a dangerous activity that needs special preparations „Victimizing” – vulnerable road users tend to become primary victims to be blamed in case of involvement in an accident, especially when not being preventive (wearing visibility vests, helmets etc.) What do we have to avoid? CERSC – RESULTS OF THE STARS EUROPE PROJECT 6 Introduction of STARS – aims and objectives EU-funded project, cities, 13 partners, 1 common goal: increase active and sustainable travel to and from schools by – Raising awareness of road safety – Increasing road safety – Increasing children’s autonomy in relation to transport – Mode shift: reducing the number of students travelling to school by car and increase the number of students walking and cycling 2 levels: – Accreditation program for primary schools – Peer-to-peer engagement targets secondary schools

CERSC – RESULTS OF THE STARS EUROPE PROJECT STARS EUROPE – achievements 188 primary schools were recruited (114 continue to implement), STARS worked with primary school students secondary school students have been involved 5.7% modal shift in primary schools and 8.8% in secondary schools from motorised transport to active modes of transport have been recorded 894 ton CO 2 saved by all STARS schools across two years 7

CERSC – RESULTS OF THE STARS EUROPE PROJECT 8 Schools conduct questionnaires about chosen and desired mode of transport Results summarized at every grade: increasing number of students wishing to go to school by car. Conclusion: Need for awareness raising in favor of sustainable modes – need for STARS!
