1 Experiences and interesting campaings for safer traffic in the world
Igor Zlatevski

2 Road safety and road safety campaigns
Road traffic today is inherently dangerous.  Consequently, in road traffic it is us humans who make the difference between hazard and safety, with little keeping us from harm should we make a mistake. Differently put, unlike other modes of transport that have procedures, safeguards or fallbacks to limit both the occurrence and impact of human error, road traffic relies more heavily on its users to keep accidents from occurring.  Given that humans are almost inadvertently prone to make mistakes and commit violations, human behaviour is of particular interest for most road safety professionals. That is where road safety campaigns come in.

3 Road safety and road safety campaigns
Together with other ‘behavioural’ measures (e.g., law enforcement, education, training, and even infrastructure to some extent) road safety campaigns are used as a means of influencing the public to behave more safely in traffic. Road safety campaigns can be defined as purposeful attempts to inform, persuade, and motivate a population (or sub-group of a population) to change its attitudes and/or behaviours to improve road safety, using organised communications involving specific media channels within a given time period.

4 Interesting campaings around the world
Sweden: ‘The Speed Camera Lottery’ The Speed Camera Lottery was a campaign which saw significant results when attempting to reduce the driving speeds. Volkswagen launched a competition called the The Fun Theory1, which challenged participants to submit ideas which would positively change people’s driving behaviour by making it fun. The winning entry – The Speed Camera Lottery – was developed to encourage people to obey the speed limit. The concept was simple: if a camera caught drivers speeding, their money would go into a pot. On the other hand, if a driver was recorded obeying the law by sticking to the speed limit, they would be entered into a lottery, with a chance of winning the money from the speeders.

6 Interesting campaings around the world Sweden: ‘The Speed Camera Lottery’
The Swedish National Society for Road Safety made this idea a reality in Stockholm, Sweden. Over a 3 day period, 24,857 cars passed the speed camera. The results were significant: Average speed before experiment: 32 km/h Average speed during experiment: 25 km/h Speed was reduced by 22%.

7 Interesting campaings around the world Serbia: ‘Beware’
Colaboration between Association of Paraplegics and Quadriplegists of Serbia and Ministry of Interior conducted a campaign for road safety. While waiting for a police officer's note for the offense committed, a person injured in a car accident advises them to beware!

9 Interesting campaings around the world France: ‘Crash Billboard’
In Europe's major cities, thousands of pedestrians are victims of traffic accidents every year. In the Paris region alone, there are more than 4,500.  The Agency of Serviceplan France and the French road safety authority DRIEA draw attention to this security risk with a spectacular campaign- creative, interactive, but also drastic. Footage and photos of the jaywalkers are also currently being used in an ad campaign around France.

11 Interesting campaings around the world Slovenia:‘Don't text and drive’
Use of mobile phone when driving is increasing in Slovenia. Research made by Slovenian Traffic Safety Agency in 2015 has shown that 75% of surveyed drivers uses telephone and sends SMS messages while driving. They wanted to raise awareness about dangers of texting and driving focused primary on youth and secondary on general public and inform them about the consequences of severe traffic injuries caused by usage of mobile phones.

13 Interesting campaings around the world Belgium:‘Safety Jingle’
Despite numerous awareness campaigns, people still drive while using their mobile phones. Knowing that using your phone behind the wheel triples your chance of an accident, the organisation ‘Parents of Road Victims’ asked us to come up with a more permanent solution: the Safety Jingle. A short (7 second) audio message radio hosts can play right after they ask listeners to call, text or post, to remind everybody not to use their phone behind the wheel.
