Affluent part of the borough of Barnet Church of England school with a clear Christian ethos Diverse community – over 50% from ethnic minorities with about 35% EAL and 13% initial learners of English Large Japanese community in particular Very low numbers of SEN and FSM Prior commitment towards sustainability within the school Image of School

4 Page 4 Event overview Road Safety Awareness Week November 2010 An opportunity to involve the whole school to raise the profile and promote the travel plan whilst achieving many of the objectives outlined within it Curriculum teaching – EYFS- holding an adults’ hand whilst crossing the road, Yr 1 – using the Green Cross Code, Yr 2 – using scooters safely, Yr 3 – sticking to speed limits (20mph road), Yr 4 - be safe be seen, Yr 5 – establishing Park and Stride zones around the school, Yr 6 - using public transport to get to secondary school Thursday afternoon – sharing assembly Poster and t-shirt design competitions Communication and information sharing with all stakeholders Image of Event

5 Page 5 Why bother with accreditation? Ofsted Report – November 2011 All categories in the outcomes section graded as outstanding with an overall judgement of outstanding. Examples: Information about the School – “The school has several awards reflecting its commitment to promoting pupils’ healthy lifestyles, provision for the arts and its work with protecting the environment.” Overall effectiveness – how good is the school? – 1 –”Particularly successful is the way that the school promotes safe journeys to school and healthy lifestyles, as demonstrated by the various awards which the school has won.” Outcomes for individuals and groups of pupils – 1 – “large numbers of pupils have taken part in fund-raising activities, safe journey campaigns and environmental working groups.” The extent to which pupils feel safe – 1 The extent to which pupils adopt healthy lifestyles – 1 The extent to which pupils contribute to the school and the wider community - 1

6 Page 6 Top tips for success 1.Prioritise – Ensure that the work is given a whole-school focus and that all staff are aware of the expectations that are placed upon them. Don’t try to do too many other awards at the same time! 2.Have clear deadlines – Ensure that all evidence is given to you well in advance of the deadline so you have time to pull it all together! 3.Delegate responsibilities – Ensure that you share out the main aspects of the job to all stakeholders including children and other members of the school community. Have a themed week or event to achieve several of the key targets and objectives at once. 4.Be realistic – Ensure that you are aware of and committed to spending the time that it takes to carry out the work. Having it as an “add on responsibility” does not work in the long-term. 4 5 The best thing that I have done, seen or learnt was……..Getting to know people better and what matters to them as a result of doing the work! (the children, staff, parents, members of the local community)
