Writing Longer How to turn your reading jots from short to long.

Writing Short and Long Today’s learning point into your Day Book: – Good readers develop a variety of ways to use writing to respond to their books. Sometimes they write short and sometimes they write long. They make purposeful decisions about what to write on and how much to write.

Short Write: Tuesday Think Box I wonder why the woman would have wanted to wish using the paw again. I wonder this because the first wish turned out really badly. Her husband was also very nervous and he warned her not to wish. I think that she was missing her son and desperately wanted to do anything she could to get him back. I think this because they both missed him and thought it was their fault.

Long Write In the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, I began to wonder why Mrs. White would want to wish again using the paw. I wondered this because the first wish turned out very badly and her husband was very concerned and warned her not to wish again. I think that she was so desperate to get her son back that she would have risked everything. I think this because the family was so sad about the tragic accident and I feel like they probably blamed themselves. I can connect to losing a loved one. I can connect to this because when my grandmother died I wished that I could bring her back so that I could talk to her. I imagine that the mother in the story felt the same way about losing her son. I think that the book is trying to teach us that you can’t change destiny, and sometimes you just have to let things go and move on from your mistakes. I think this because every time the family used magic to try to change their future bad things happened.

“Monday” Long Write Create a long write using your Tuesday think box from today. Make sure you add all of the parts necessary for a long write.

Monday Long Write Introduce Title Recopy/update the original think box with reaction Give a fully developed connection (Book, You, Book) Give a theme, or a lesson you have learned through your reading Explain how you learned the lesson using text details

Independent Reading Read in your IRB Today as you read we will use sticky notes to show our thinking. Remember that as reading gets harder we use all of our strategies to show our thinking.
