6 Writing Prompt Writing Situation – There are many challenges facing the world today including poverty, pollution, and diseases. Imagine if you had the opportunity to change something about the world. Directions for Writing – If you could change the world in one way, what would it be? Write an essay that explains the problem. Be sure to explain how the elimination of this problem would change the world for the better.

7 Types of Hooks – Surprising Statement
Five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. This devastating disease steals the victims’ memories. They forget their families, their friends and even their own names. Eventually, anyone who has Alzheimer’s will die. Eliminating this disease will change the world by saving millions of lives and ending the heartache of those who have watched their loved one’s suffer.

8 Types of Hooks - Description
Every day, my grandmother sits in front of the window at the nursing home where she lives. Her eyes look vacant and scared. She doesn’t talk. No one knows what she is thinking. My grandmother has Alzheimer’s Disease. I would do anything to make her better. Eliminating this disease would not only save her life, it would change the lives of millions of Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families.

9 Types of Hooks- A Question
How would you feel if you woke up one day and didn’t know where you were? What if you couldn’t remember your own family? Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that affects millions of Americans. It causes people to forget their families and loved ones. Eventually, they even forget how to eat and breathe. Finding a cure for this terrible disease would answer the prayers of millions of people worldwide.

10 Types of Hooks – A Story Every year, my grandparents, who live in New York, come to visit for a week or two during Thanksgiving. One year when they arrived, my grandmother forgot to bring any clothes in her suitcase. We had to go to the store and buy her new clothes. That’s when I first knew something was wrong. A year later, I learned she had Alzheimer’s Disease. This disease eventually took her life. A cure for this disease would change the world and give many people a second chance at life.

11 Your Assignment Write an introduction for your essay. Be sure to include an ATTENTION GRABBER and a THESIS Statement. You can use the Thesis Statement from your outline or you can write a new one.

12 Body You need at least 3 supporting paragraphs
Each paragraph needs a topic sentence to explain what that paragraph will be about Use details and examples to support the topic sentence

13 Supporting Paragraphs
Use transitions between paragraphs Ex. Always, then, next, later, soon, before, finally, after, earlier, afterward, tomorrow, mainly, most importantly, least importantly, worst, best, similarly, likewise, also, neither, nor, either, still, instead

14 Supporting Paragraph #1
If there were a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, my grandmother would still be her old self. She could live at home with my grandpa, who misses her a lot. She could still visit me and meet her great-grandchildren. Instead, I have to visit her at the nursing home, where she looks at me blankly, as if to say, “Who are you?” If there was a cure for Alzheimer’s, I could have my grandma back.

15 Supporting Paragraph #2
My grandmother isn’t the only person with Alzheimer’s. Millions of other people in America also suffer from this disease. If there were a cure, they would all get better too. They would remember their families again and they would be able to take care of themselves again. They wouldn’t have to live in nursing homes away from their families. A cure for Alzheimer’s would help many people.

16 Supporting Paragraph #3
Lastly, if there were a cure for Alzheimer’s, no one would have to worry about getting the disease. Since both my grandmothers had Alzheimer’s, sometimes I am afraid that I might get it too one day too. That is a very scary thought. I bet a lot of other people are afraid of getting this disease too. Knowing there was a cure would make us all less scared.

17 Conclusions There are several ways to write a conclusion. You can:
Summarize your essay Restate your thesis, or main idea Make a recommendation Make a prediction Ask a question

18 My Conclusion Alzheimer’s Disease is a very sad disease that affects many, many people. It has even affected my own family. I really wish scientists could find a cure for this disease. If they did, the world would be a better place.
