General Assembly Comprised of all 193 UN nations (Kosovo, Vatican, Taiwan) Only non-members Makes non-binding recommendations to the member nations Cannot compel any nation to do something Meets every Sept-Dec in New York every year Every nation gets one vote. Peace and security votes need 2/3 approval. All others need simple majority. 70 th session will open on September 15 th 2015 The GA can meet in emergency sessions if requested

Economic and Social Council Coordinates the Economic and Social work of the UN Has 54 members elected by GA for 3 year terms If has Nine functional committees: SEE STRUCTURE CHART It alternates its meetings annually between Geneva and NY It also has no binding power This works closely with NGOs and creates a link between the UN and civil society

International Court of Justice Known as the World Court it resides in The Hague (Netherlands) Consists of 15 judges elected for 9 year terms All P-5 must have a judge Role is to decide disputes between nations and give advisory opinions on legal questions Not to be confused with the International Criminal Court which deals with individuals and crimes against humanity Participation is always voluntary, but if both parties agree them they must comply with the decision

Trusteeship Established to provide international supervision to the 11 trust territories administered by the P-5 after WWII The goal was to guide these territories until they were ready for nationhood Ex. Togo, Cameroon, Somoa This branch is currently not active and will not be unless a situation arises to warrant it

Secretariat Carries out the administrative work of the UN Headed by the Secretary General Ban Ki Moon SG is appointed for a 5 year renewable term Moon was reelected in June of 2011 and will be serving until Total staff is about 9,000 people from 170 nations SG is the face of the UN and often sets the agenda for SC meetings

Security Council Each member has one vote 5 permanent nations have veto power Procedural matters require a 3/5 majority (No veto) Substantive matters are 3/5 plus the consent of the P-5 “All members of the UN agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the SC” They can apply sanctions, take military actions against an aggressor, and many others The SC functions continuously in NY
