DAY 49 – LOTF QUIZ, LOTF AND SETTING, AND INFINITIVES

OBJECTIVES:  Understand and evaluate the use of setting in LotF.  Understand and Identify infinitives as they are used in a sentence. Homework: Finish Chapters 5-8 in LotF and the study guide by Tuesday 19th Close Reading due Friday VCR 8 A

WARM UP – IDENTIFY THE INFINITIVE PHRASES Remember, infinitives are “to + verb.” Phrases consist of the verbal and all modifiers to the verbal. 1. You have two choices, to stay or to go. 2. Bill tried to warn them of the problem. 3. Jim had no choice except to resign from the position. 4. The child was afraid to tell the truth. 5. The teachers came to offer their service.

VCR 7A  Take out your books and start working on your vocabulary.  Whatever you don’t finish is homework.  If you finish early, take out LotF and read.

LOTF 1-4 QUIZ  Take out your laptops and click on the link.  You are allowed to use your books on the quiz.  No talking during the quiz.  When finished, close your laptops and continue reading LotF.

“LORD OF THE FLIES” AND SETTING Open LotF and read pgs Highlight examples of setting. On a large sheet of paper, construct the graphic organizer on the following slide. When you have completed this section, write a paragraph at the bottom of the paper and explain the role that setting plays in LotF. When completed, flip over the paper and draw what you imagine the island to look like.

GRAMMAR – INFINITIVE PHRASES  Infinitives -> verb form that acts as a noun, adjective, or an adverb and most begin with to.  Ex: I want to go.  Infinitive phrases -> infinitive + any modifiers / complements. The entire phrase can be used as a noun, adjective, or an adverb.  Ex: I want to nap before dinner.
