Introduction to Careers Connect Careers Connect is an online system, through the internet, available for students to get involved in a range of Careers Network activities. Through the system students can: Book on to a range of Careers Network events running throughout the year which can include employer talks/presentations, employability skills workshops (i.e. interview skills, CV’s, etc) and careers fairs Book appointments with Careers Advisers, Applications Advisers and Internship Officers for 1-1 support around career direction, sourcing work experience opportunities, CVs, application forms and interview preparation Search for internships, placements, graduate vacancies and volunteering opportunities through the online vacancy portal Send direct messages to Advisers for guidance and support

Introduction to Careers Connect Online vacancy portal is used by all Internship Officers to upload and advertise employment opportunities. This includes both bespoke opportunities (only available to University of Birmingham students) and ‘public domain’ positions (opportunities available on other websites). It is a central point for students to find the latest available vacancies

Setting up your profile Will need to set this up first before accessing the system Information about you About your preferences, including job/opportunity alerts!

Searching for work experience opportunities From the navigation bar, select Opportunities My Opportunities – matched against your pre-set preferences (profile) Search & Apply – search the system and apply to opportunities Search Organisations – search for opportunities from a particular organisation

Search & apply to opportunities You will initially be presented with a list of vacancies which are expiring shortly:

Use the left hand navigation panel to refine your search by using the filter options. You can search by: Search & apply to opportunities Business Area – search by a range of business sector related to your employment interests and disciplines Location – specify your search by region and location within the UK Salary – specify your salary preference and refine the opportunities accordingly Posted on – filter by the date they were posted Country – search for positions within the UK and also overseas. Opportunity Type – search for summer internships, placements, graduate positions as well as a range of other employment types Academic Areas – opportunities relevant to your degree/discipline (recently expanded!) Narrow or expand your search by selecting/deselecting these filter options

Additional search options & Quick links: Search & apply to opportunities Text Search – if you know the name of the opportunity i.e. IT support intern or any key words Reference ID – if you have been sent brief details including a reference number Employer name – to search for opportunities from a particular employer Save your search – if your results come back with some interesting/relevant opportunities

Search & apply to opportunities Once you find a position of interest, click on the job title and you will be directed to the full advert. The advert will consist of role responsibilities, person specifications, relevant academic area of interest, closing date and details of how to apply:

Booking an appointment Hover over the Appointment tab and select Search & Book You will be presented with appointment types: Application & CV support Advice & Guidance Internship advice Click on the relevant one to find an available slot and make a booking You can review any appointments via My Appointments

Booking onto an event Hover over the Events tab and select Search & Book

Booking onto an event Clicking onto an event will give you some further information, including a quick link to book onto it: You can review which events you are booked onto by selecting the My Events from the Events tab
