1 Skills For Tomorrow Module 4: You, the On-Line Job Market and Interview Skills. The four sections of this module will enable learners to: Compare online job sites and their benefits Understand how online job hunting works Prepare for an interview Consider their next steps

2 Activity 1: Online Job Sites Aims: Consider the range of on-line job sites that exist Compare the sites and consider how they may benefit you

3 Task: Using the useful job websites in your hand-out search for jobs that may interest you. Don’t just use one site, use a few to get a feel how the different sites work. After you have searched for some jobs on different sites consider the following points:- Are all the sites the same? Are all the jobs the same on the sites? Did the different sites offer C.V writing guides, interview guides, search saves, uploading of your C.V. and did you have to pay to use any of these additional services? Did you have to register to use the site? Note the key points of your discussions and be prepared to report back and discuss. Activity 1: Online Job Sites

9 Activity 3: Preparing for the Interview Aims: Consider the structure of an interview Think about what the employer wants from the interview Prepare for interviews

10 Activity 3: Preparing for the Interview Task: As a whole class discuss the following points:- What is the purpose of the job interview? What should you look out for in the invitation letter? Is there a selection test? What might be involved? What sort of questions might you be asked? What sort of questions might you want to ask? What should you take with you to a job interview? What other points should you consider? Note the key points of your discussions.

11 Activity 4: Your Skills for Tomorrow Aims: Reflect on the course Consider your next steps Think about possible learning needs and development for sending a covering letter Consider the structure and layout of a formal letter

12 Activity 4: Your Skills for Tomorrow Task: Working in pairs, reflect back on the work you have done over the four modules of the course. Interview your partner and make an action plan for them using the following headings: Write a generic C.V. or update a current one? Get Information, Advice and Guidance from a ULR or qualified advisor i.e. National Careers Service, Citizens Advice Bureau, Job Centre Plus, Financial Services Agency? Start looking at what types of jobs are currently on offer? Sign up to relevant job search sites? Consider if your skills the meet current labour market needs? Join a formal/informal job club Look at what courses you need to complete to update your skills? Think about a complete change of career direction? Make a copy of the action plan for your partner and exchange plans. Using the plan drawn up for you start putting your new Skills for Tomorrow into action!
