What we doWhat we don’t do Advise on how you can find part time and full time work, work experience or internships Recommend or introduce you to an employer Support you in writing job applications, CVs and preparing for interviews, through workshops and short appointments with a careers adviser Arrange a placement, part time or full time work for you Keep our online jobs database up-to-date with part time and full time vacancies Provide lists of all the employers recruiting people from your country or your degree subject Help you choose a career which suits you through information and discussion with a careers adviser in a short appointment Proofread your CV/ application form for spelling and grammatical errors. Run events through which you can meet employers and find out about different careers in and outside the UK. They come onto campus but they don’t recruit (at a fair/event) Give detailed advice about your entitlement to work in the UK:

7 Careers Other ways of finding jobs Take your CV to local shops / central London shops Go into main streets in central London: Oxford & Regent Street, Covent Garden. Also Westfield and Canary Wharf. How did you find out about your part-time job? It was quite a challenge for me as I chose to randomly drop my CVs in almost everywhere possible, from high street retail outlets, to superstores and many more. At a later date one of the Starbucks stores needed a member of staff. I was called for interview and got the job. Nafis Ahmad, Student from Bangladesh

8 Careers Applying for Jobs 1)Advert will tell you to send your CV to the company directly or fill out an application form online/download 2) Don’t bother with websites where you load your CV up for employers to look at: only 3% of jobs gained from posting your CV online! 3)How to write a CV: CV clinic daily at 12.45 or CV workshop on Monday 11 th Oct, 1-2pm 4) Book a short appointment with an adviser to get your application form checked

10 Careers Cover Letters Beginning This identifies who you are, what you are applying for, and how you heard about it. Middle To explain your skills and experience relevant to the job To explain why you want to work for them End Briefly states your availability for interview. Sign off the letter: Yours sincerely if you addressed to a particular name, or Yours faithfully if you used a job title/Sir/Madam.
