What are sight words? Sight words are words that your child should be able to read in less than two seconds. This is important because it enhances their chances of getting to the end of a sentence in time to remember how it began.

Important Points The first 13 words make up 25% of what we read. The first 100 words make up 50% of what we read Goals: Kindergarten: 100 words 1 st Grade: 300 words 2 nd Grade: 1,000 words

Strategies There are many strategies that you can use at home to help your child master their sight words. The next slide will talk to you about how to introduce a sight word to your child!

Introducing a Sight Word Show the word Say the word Spell the word Visually begin to trace the word with your eyes and finger, starting at it, pretend your eye is a camera Visually throw it up on the ceiling, make it bigger, tracing the word, spelling the word.

At Home Activities

Sand Writing Fill the bottom of a cookie sheet with sand. Place a set of word cards face up on the table. Have your child choose a word, spell it with their finger in the sand, and then say it aloud. After writing the words in the sand have your child sort the words according to beginning letter, number of letters, etc.

I’m Thinking Of…. Give your child a small group of word cards. Say a clue such as “I’m thinking of a word that has three letters” or “I’m thinking of a word that ends with the letter” or “I’m thinking of a word that has a in the middle” Have your child locate the card, hold it up, say the word, then spell the word and hand the card to you. Repeat these steps with a variety of clues until you have collected all of the cards.

Memory Match Make matching pairs of each sight word on index cards. Select several pairs of sight words. Place them face down on the table. Take turns selecting two cards trying to make a match. Be sure that each player reads the card when they turn it over. IF a player makes a match they keep the cards. The game continues until every match has been made. The player with the most matches wins the game.

Match and Pairs Make matching pairs of 10 of your favorite sight word on index cards. Now you can use the 20 cards to play the matching games below. In each game you can match a word to the same word. Take turns until all pairs are matched. Match: Spread out cards for 10 different words. Stack the other 10 in a pile, face down. Take turns picking a card and placing it beneath the matching word, reading the words as you go. Pairs: Deal all cards between two players. Set aside pairs within your hand. Take turns drawing cards from each other. If it is a match, read it and set the cards aside.

Make and Take Activity Today you will be making a sight word cootie catcher to practice your sight words. The next slide will have our list of the third hundred sight words. Pick 8 words to write on the blank spaces of the cootie catcher. Then we will explain how to make it!
