1 Mrs. Chasidy & Ms. Lisa September 21 st -25 th Classroom News *Please do not forget that if you would like your child to wear their own headphones or earbuds feel free to purchase some and send them in. We will have a special place to keep them for only your child to wear. *Tonight is Family Night from 5:00-7:00! If you come at 5:00 there will be free chili. You can also stop by the book fair in the library. Beginning at 6:00 classrooms will be open with activities in the rooms. Please stop by our room to see your child’s leadership notebook and receive a free book! *Please sign up to receive text messages from me by typing in 81010 for the number and @08861 for the message. I only have 8 people signed up so far! *Fall break begins on Oct. 2 nd -9 th. *Spanish words of the week: por favor (please) *I still have not received all papers for conference. Please return by tomorrow if you have not done so. *We will be going on a field trip on Oct. 15 th ! Please return the permission slip and money asap. *NEW sight word cards will be coming home this week. I will have them laminated for you by Wednesday. I will also have assessed your child on all Unit Review words. If your child has not mastered the majority of the list please practice those words for Wednesday night practice. I will be talking with everyone more about what sight words your child needs to practice when we conference. *MAP data is going home today also. Please review and write down any questions you have for me so that when we meet next week we can discuss them. *Spelling tests begin this week. Please see the refrigerator copy for a list of words. I will choose two words from the HFW list for bonus. Your child will be given a first chance on Thursday. If they make a 100% they do not have to retake it on Friday. *An additional math homework page is going home today. Your child will return it on Friday with their reading log. 2 MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursday Read the leveled reader with your child. This is the paper copy in your child’s book buddy. Help them figure out unknown words by using these strategies… *Look at the picture for clues. *Get your mouth ready for the first sound. *Use other clues in the sentence to figure out what word will make sense. *Blending the sounds in the word. Have your child read their book buddy story to you. This is a story of their choice. Help them figure out unknown words by using these strategies… If your child struggles with this story you may read it to them. *Look at the picture for clues. *Get your mouth ready for the first sound. *Use other clues in the sentence to figure out what word will make sense. *Blending the sounds in the word. Practice high frequency words by playing a game. Here are a few examples… Slap that Sight Word: Arrange sight words in a row. Give your child a fly swatter and have them slap the sight word you say. Go Fish: Create two sets of sight words on index cards. Play go fish by matching sight words. Target Practice: Write sight words on a paper plate. Have students throw a ball at the sight word you say or shoot a Nerf gun at the sight word you say. Scrambled Eggs: Use letter tiles or cut up letters of a choice word. Put them in an Easter egg and have your child put the letters in order to spell the word. Sight Word Soccer: Write sight words on the lids of water bottles. Have your child read the word. If they get if right they flick the words into a goal. Pancake Words: Write sight words on a paper plate. Give your child a spatula and have them flip the paper plate like a pancake. Then have them read the word they flip. Mystery Word: Use a white crayon and write the words on paper. Have your child use a marker and color over it. It reveals the word. Have your child read the mystery word. Read: Sam, Come Back! with your child. This is a first grade reader that will only go home on Thursday. If your child struggles with this story you may read it to them. Below are some suggestions to help your child. *Have them retell the story. *Have them find words that rhyme. *Have them find a specific sight word in the story. *Have them find specific letters.
