Why are sight words important? Sight words make up 60% of all written material. A strong sight word vocabulary builds more fluent readers

Activities that help build sight word fluency Flash Cards Write the sight words on index and have your child read it. If they don’t know the word read it to them and then repeat.

Sight Word Go Fish Write a sight word on 2 index cards. You should use at least 15 sight words. Shuffle the cards and pass out 7 to each person. If you have 2 of the same you can lay down the pair but you must read the word. Continue playing by asking your partner if they have a word that matches one in your hand. If they don’t you “go fish” or pick up from pile. Play continues until someone has put down all their cards.

Sight Word Bingo Create a bingo card or find one on line. Fill in the squares with sight words. Write the same sight words on a slip of paper. Pick a slip of paper and read it. Mark off the word if on your card. You can cross out word with crayon or use coins, poker chips, or soda bottle caps as markers.

Sight Word Memory Write the sight words on 2 index cards and then shuffle them. Lay them all out face down. Taking turns turn 2 cards over and read the word printed on card. If they match you keep the pair. If not turn them face down again and it is the next persons turn.

Sight Word Checkers Create a checker board coloring in every other square black. In each of the non black spaces write a different sight words. For markers you can use coins (fake or real), poker chips, or soda bottle caps. Place markers on squares with words. Play just like checkers except you need to read the word that is written in the square you want to move in. If your child can not read the word you can either read it to them and have them repeat or they can’t make a move that turn.
