1 ST Amendment enacted to override Supreme Court Decision. Person can’t sue a state from another state and a foreign person or government can’t sue Changed a provision in Article 3 section 2 of the constitution.

 Changed Electoral policy of choosing a President.  Problem; Election of Pres./ V.P. tie Adams- Jefferson  Changed P/V.P. on separate ballots, today same ticket. V.P. elected to office not just the runner up for president.

 Amendments 13, 14, 15 came about as a direct result of the Civil War.  Abolished Slavery in the U.S. (1865)  1 st of 3 amendments dealing with slaves.  Called the Reconstruction Amendments.

 “ Black Codes” in the South  These codes did the following:  1. Limit A.A. freedom and Rights  2. kept A.A. at the bottom of Social Order  3. Couldn’t vote or sit on Jury’s  4. No job put back on plantation to work

 Civil Rights guaranteed (1868)  African Americans granted citizenship.  Abolished 3/5 law  Set ground work for civil rights laws.  Many women opposed the 14 th and 15 th amendments because of the wording, they objected to “Male” when referring to voting rts.

 Black voting rights (1870)  Sought to protect the right of citizens, particularly former slaves and minorities, to vote in federal and state elections. NO STATE.  Because of the wording of MALE in both amendments many women left aboliton movement to work just on women rights.

 1913 Authorized the government can tax people directly instead of states.  Those whose income was below poverty level were not taxed.

 1913 direct election of senators by the people.  No longer chosen by state legislatures.

 Prohibition- outlawing the making, selling, distributing of alcohol. (1919) SOCIETY WANTED THIS.  Amendment 21 (1933)  Repel of 18 th amendment legalizing alcohol.  Only amendment to be ratified at special conventions instead of state legislatures.  Social Problem Amendments

 Gave women the right to vote in federal and state elections (1920)  AMENDMENT 20  “Lame Duck” amendment Moved time for new President to take office from March to January.

 Set term limits on office of the president to two terms (1947) (FDR)  A person who has served more than 2 years in the place of an elected president may be elected president only once. Most 10 yrs.  This did not apply to Truman who was in office when the 22 nd amendment was proposed.

 Gave the District of Colombia voting rights. (1961) for presidential elections.  Before this residents never had voted in presidential elections- constitution states provided only states should choose presidential electors.

 Abolition of poll taxes ( 1964)  TAX PAID TO VOTE  LITERACY TEST AS WELL  Used to keep African Americans from voting.

 Succession to office of president (1967).  After Kennedy assasination  Orderly transfer of power.  V.P. takes over for president etc.  V.P.  SpeakerHouse  Senate Pro Temp  Sec State  Sec of Treasury  Sec of Defense

 Changing the voting age from 21 to 18 ( 1971)  AMENDMENT 27  Congressional pay for senators and Reps. Oldest and newest amendment.
