Course Planning Sheet

Selecting Freshman Courses

What do I take in 9th Grade? (Be sure to attend breakout sessions on specific subjects at Freshmen Welcome Night) 1. Literature and Composition 1 2. World History 1/Civics 3. Math 4. Science 5. Elective - PE, Health 6. Elective (1 year-long class* or 2 semester- long classes) *Most common are World Language, Music, PE

Humanities Option #1 – BLOCK Literature and Composition 1 and World History 1/Civics t 1 classroom t 2 consecutive periods (i.e. 1 st & 2 nd periods) t 2 teachers

Humanities Option #2 – HONORS BLOCK t 1 classroom, 2 consecutive periods t 2 teachers t A successful honors student should be intellectually curious, enjoy reading & read on a regular basis, possess strong study habits and be able to write a five paragraph essay

Humanities Option #3 – SPLIT BLOCK Literature and Composition 1 and World History 1/Civics t 2 separate classrooms t 2 separate periods – may or may not be back to back t Same students in both classes

Math The math sequence (non-IEP) is: t CC Algebra I t CC Geometry t CC Algebra II t Advanced Algebra, Pre-calculus, IB Pre-HL Math, Statistics, or Financial Algebra t Algebra 1 Lab & Geometry Lab – support classes for students who struggle with math; must be taken concurrently with Algebra 1 or Geometry.

Science t Biology (Year-long class)  Biology is recommended in 9th or 10th grade t Chemistry Laboratory Methods (Semester class) t Physics Laboratory Methods (Semester class)

Physical Education (PE) t 1.5 credits = 3 semesters t 1.0 MUST be done through classes t The remaining.5 credits can be done outside of school: t School Sports (.25 waived for each school sports season, 2 season maximum) t Outside credit

Course Options t World Languages t Spanish1A and 1B (Spanish 1 taken over 2 years) t Spanish I, Spanish II t French I t Japanese I t Mandarin Chinese 1 t PE t Spartan 360, Intro to Fitness

Course Options (continued) t Career & Technical Education (CTE) t Graphic Design 1 & 2, Police Forensics 1 & 2, TV Productions, Child Development t Health t Intro to Computer Science t Website Design t Fine Art

Equivalency Courses There are some courses that satisfy more than one graduation requirement. (example: Health course satisfies both Health & 0.5 CTE requirement) These equivalent courses do not reduce the number of credits required for graduation, but may change the courses needed to fulfill graduation requirements.

Outside Credit Options Students are able to take up to 4.0 credits outside of Skyline, but only 2.0 per school year (such as online courses, private accredited institutions, etc.) 50% of any graduation requirement must be met through Issaquah School District courses Students must receive written pre-approval to earn outside credit

Course Selection Things to keep in mind when selecting course requests:  Balance - consider academic load & outside involvements; sports, clubs, home, etc.  Learning Recommendations for sequential courses  Graduation requirements  College requirements  Typically 2-3 years of World Language  Math based Science (such as yearlong Physics or yearlong Chemistry)

Welcome to Skyline!
