Thermal and Chemical Energy

Thermal Energy Thermal Energy Thermal energy is kinetic energy because molecules are in motion. Temperature Temperature = the average kinetic energy of the molecules in an object. Temperature –Temperature and thermal energy are not the same Heat Heat = the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another. Heat –Heat always flows from the warmer substance to the cooler –Heat can change the state of a substance

Transferring Thermal Energy Thermal Energy can be transferred in three ways ConductionConduction = direct transfer of heat between objects that touch. Conduction –Conductors conduct heat (metals) –Insulators do not conduct heat easily (air) ConvectionConvection = a heat transfer caused by the mixing of a gas or liquid. Convection RadiationRadiation = transfer of thermal energy through electromagnetic waves Radiation –Only radiation can transfer heat through space

Chemical Energy Chemical Energy Form of potential energy. –Some chemical reactions give off thermal energy; some take in thermal energy. Chemical energy can be released as kinetic energy. Body uses food you eat  Thermal Energy Chemical Energy  light and heat (burning)
