1 “IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE!”
Thermal Energy “IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE!”

2 What is Thermal Energy When any form of matter gets WARMER,
the kinetic energy of the particles that make it up increases. This causes the object’s THERMAL energy to increase Think of THERMAL energy as HEAT An increase in thermal energy can lead to a change of state Ex: Solid to Liquid or Liquid to GAS

3 Thermal Energy Thermal energy is measured by temperature – thermometers Thermal (Heat) Energy can be caused by rubbing objects together

4 Thermal Energy Thermal energy is transferred (moves) in three ways
Conduction Convection Radiation

5 CONDUCTION The transfer of heat between objects that are touching
The stove heats the pan by conduction. The handle will also warm due to conduction.

6 CONVECTION The transfer of heat by a moving liquid or gas
through ocean currents is an example of CONVECTION

7 RADIATION The transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves
ALL OBJECTS that emit light give off thermal energy in the form of radiation
