SLO Assessment Review Section 1

Differentiate between an output device and an input device. Input: any device that allows a user to enter data into a computer. Output: any device that allows a user to generate data from a computer

Explain the purpose of an operating system. Give an example of one. Operating System: is a software that communicates with the hardware and allows other programs to run Example: Windows

Differentiate between Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM). RAM is volatile memory that loses its content when the computer is turned off ROM is nonvolatile computer memory containing data that normally can only be read but not written to/copied/changed/modified

Differentiate among hardware, software & peripherals. Hardware is the basic components of a computer system. It includes the monitor, keyboard and the hard drive Software: consists of programs and applications that run computers (Ex: MS Word 2013) Peripherals or “external hardware” are any external devices that provide input and output for the computer

Which devices below are input, output or both? Scanner – I Monitor – O Projector – O Flash Drive – B Keyboard - I

Differentiate between CD, RW and DVD. Define the acronym and give a definition of each. CD: Compact Disc – a disc on which a program, data, music, etc. is digitally encoded RW: Read-Write or Rewriteable – disc allows a user to save different information on it DVD: Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc – is an optical disc used to store audio, video or computer data, especially films for home viewing

Discuss the organization of files. File management refers to the manipulation of documents and data in files on a computer. A file directory is a location in a computer where files are stored. It is similar to a filing cabinet that contains folders which contains files. The top directory is the C drive (C:/) – this is the root directory.

How is a new folder created on a desktop or within another file directory? *Remember your U: drive is a file directory too* To create a new folder on the desktop or in a file directory, right click on the desktop/file directory, select NEW, then click FOLDER.

How can a user rename a folder or file? To rename a file or folder, RIGHT CLICK on the file name and select RENAME. Then, type the new name. A user must close the file before attempting to rename it.

Evaluate the actions of an online “cyber predator”. Online cyber predators target both boys and girls of all ages and use the anonymity of the Internet to their advantage. They use children’s personal issues to befriend the child and empathize with them while building a pseudo friendship.

What should you avoid posting online for safety and security reasons? Searchable user profiles Personal information

Define intellectual property. Evaluate the impact of computer piracy on intellectual property. Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind. An example of intellectual property is symbols. Computer piracy is intellectual property theft which is a criminal offense.

Differentiate between copyright infringement and plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else’s work without giving proper credit. It is the failure to cite adequately. Schools enforce plagiarism.
