Welcome to Technology Michael Cox October 20, 2015 Do now: Open your typing test data file Take a three minute typing test at Typingtest.com (Aesop test) Record your results in your file

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

The MOTHERBOARD The motherboard holds the components or parts of the computer

CPU (Central Processing Unit) The CPU is the brains of the computer It controls information & tells other components of the computer what to do. The next slide has some pictures of what the CPU looks like #2

CPU The type of CPU in a computer also determines has fast that computer can operate. #3

CPU A CPU generates lots of heat, so there is usually a small fan on top of the CPU to cool it down 7 #4

CPU There are many different styles of fans

Memory Computers use two types of memory Primary memory which is stored on chips located on the motherboard Secondary memory that is stored in the hard drive #5

Memory  Primary memory holds all of the essential memory that tells your computer how to be a computer.  Secondary memory holds the information that you store in a computer #6

RAM Memory (random-access memory) RAM is a form of computer data storage. RAM takes the form of integrated circuits that allow stored data to be accessed in any order #7

What did I learn today? Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Your assignment: At the bottom of your notes, type a narrative about what you learned today.

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

RAM Memory (random-access memory) RAM is often associated with volatile types of memory where its stored information is lost if the power is turned off Day 2.1

ROM – (read only memory) ROM is a form of storage used in computers. Data stored in ROM cannot be modified, or can be modified only slowly or with some difficulty. Day 2.2

ROM – (read only memory) Many parts of the computers operating system is built into ROM and contains the most essential programs that a computer needs to run properly. Day 2.3

ROM – (read only memory) ROM is associated with non-volatile types of memory where its stored information is saved if the power is turned off. Day 2.4

BIOS (Basic Input Output System)  One type of ROM is known as the BIOS.  BIOS is responsible for waking up the computer. When you turn it on, it reminds all the parts what they do. Day 2.5

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

Storage The purpose of storage in a computer is to hold data or information or information and get that data to the CPU as quickly as possible when it is needed.

Storage Computers use disks for storage: hard disks that are located inside the computer

Storage External devices used for storage are flash drives, CDs, Sandisk, etc.

CD - ROMS CD-ROM is short for Compact Disk – Read Only Memory It is also referred to as a CD A CD is a shiny, circular disk that stores data A CD or CD-ROM can only read data from the disk

Other Types of Disks CD-RW (RW stands for rewrite) CD-RW allows you to write information to the disk more than one time as well as read from it.

Other Types of Disks DVD (Digital Video Disk) A DVD looks like a CD, but it holds a lot more information. You can watch movies, listen to music, or play video games from DVDs.

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

Operating Systems The most important program on any computer is the Operating System or OS.

Operating Systems The OS is a large program made up of many smaller programs that control how the CPU communicates with other hardware components. Day 4.2

Operating Systems It also makes computers easier to operate by people who don’t understand programming languages. Operating Systems make computers “user friendly.” Day 4.3

Windows OS Windows is similar to the Macintosh OS, because it also uses a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that uses graphics or pictures to help the user navigate within the computer system. Day 4.4

Windows OS There are different operating systems for PCs, but the most common is Windows, which was developed by a company named Microsoft. Day 4.5

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

Computer Programs  A program is a set of instructions that tells the computer how to perform a specific task.  For example, your favorite computer game is a program.

Types of Computer Programs  There are many types of programs for the computer  They are grouped according to the tasks they perform

Types of Computer Programs Here are some very common types of programs and some examples of their uses: Research – encyclopedias, informational programs

Main Parts of a Computer There are 4 main parts of a computer Input Storage Processor Output

Input Devices A device that enables information to be entered into the computer

Storage A unit that holds and gives information to the processor as needed There are two types of storage Temporary Long-term storage

Temporary Storage holds information for a short periods and only when the computer is on

Temporary Storage RAM volatile type of memory where the stored information is lost if the power is turned off

Long-term storage Holds information for as long as you want it

Today we are going to explore the question “How Does a Computer Work?” by looking at the different components of a computer Objective:

Processor o The brains of the computer, it controls all functions – CPU o The motherboard hold the CPU and physically connects all the other main parts of the computer o The case houses the motherboard

Output Devices An output device receives information from the processor in the form of words, sounds, or pictures.

Output Devices Some examples of output devices

Ports Ports are an interface between a computer to another computer or peripheral devices.

Ports An USB port is one of the main ports that is used to connect many different devices to a computer

Ports Different ports allows the user to connect various things to a PC (Personal Computer).

Cables Cable are essential in computer systems There are many different types of cables made from different types of materials
