This presentation is intended to be used with my High School English students. A lesson teaching them about Web2.0 tools, in particular: PENZU journaling and Bubbl.us brainstorming.

Today we are going to be covering some useful tools that we will be implementing in the classroom. We will be discussing Web 2.0 tools that can be utilized in and out of the classroom. The purpose: to give you tools to create original and meaningful assignments for my English 1 class. Today we will be navigating through these sites and tools. Creating new modes of learning and yes even playing with these tools. The sky is the limit with many of these tools – limited only by your imagination. This is a collaborative lesson, that means I want your ideas on these tools. I will be telling you how we will use them in class so I want you to tell me what you think of them. - So let us begin.

Web 2.0 is the new wave of technology that is engulfing our society today. Extremely user friendly applications/programs that do not require an individual to have a degree in computer science to use. Also many if not all of these applications are free or of minimal cost. Many of you are probably already aware of these tools but did not know what they are called.

What we just saw in the video is not the future of technology. It is now. Many of you know how to create online texts, videos and songs as well as how to upload and share their creations online.

I can already hear the questions buzzing around your head. Why do I need to know this? Why do I need to know this? How is this going to help me learn English? PENZU – Online Journal Instead of using notebooks or spirals for your journals this year we are going to be using PENZU. PENZ –WHAT?

This Website is a free online journal Website. You will create an account and have a password protected journal online. You have the ability to share your journal writings through or post it to a blog. Our campus (THANK YOU CAMPUS!) has paid a fee to upgrade to a package which allows you to access your journal through your cell phones or anyway online. Let’s watch the PENZU DEMO. Now that you have created a journal entry online and turned it in by ing it to me. We are going to move onto another website – BUBBL.US BUBBL.US This a brainstorming website. Instead of creating your Brainstorming maps on paper you will be working with them online. Let’s Begin.

Step 1: We will begin by going to the website: Step 2: Click on the Gray Ribbon - START BRAINSTORMING Step 3: Start Here bubble – We are going to practice Brainstorming with the topic of Literature. We are going to explore the question – WHAT IS LITERATURE? WHAT IS LITERATURE? Each sub category should be put in a brand new bubble. Each sub category should be put in a brand new bubble. If you can expand on it further then that should receive a new bubble. If you can expand on it further then that should receive a new bubble. Try to get at least 14 bubbles – THINK! Pretty neat, isn’t it? Not the same old brainstorming. Play with the colors and angles. IF you make a mistake X it out and BOOM! It is blown up. Now we are going to save it – In order to do that you have to create a free account.

Now that your account is created - Save your brainstorm as Literature and your initials. EX: LiteratureVG Click on the button on the bottom left of the screen that says MENU. Click export. Save it as a JPEG. It will ask you to OPEN or SAVE your document – SAVE it. Save it to the desktop. YOU ARE DONE!

To recap – we worked our way through two new tools today that we will be using in my Freshman English class. Penzu: Online Journal that you will be ing to me. Practice with it at home and show your parents. Teach them how to sign up and create accounts. me new things that you create. Show your teachers, and teach them how to use it as well. You will get better and better each time you log. Be ready – tomorrow when you come to class you will have a PENZU journal assignment waiting for you!
